The Way This Premature Baby Rescued The Doctor Who Saved Him Is Conclusive Proof The Circle Of Life Is Real

The world has been just an awful suckhole of bad news lately. If, like me, you are in need of a brief respite, then you are about to get it from the story of the devoted pediatrician who saved a premature baby’s life and then had his own life saved in return.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, 30 years ago Dr. Michael Shannon saved the life of a premature baby boy who weighed just 3.2 pounds at birth and was given a 50-percent chance of survival. It was tough, but Shannon reportedly stayed on round the clock until the baby was stable.

Many years later, Dr. Shannon was involved in a terrible car accident. His car was trapped under a burning truck, on fire with him inside. Firefighters on their way back from a different call were able to get to the scene in minutes and had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Shannon from the burning vehicle. Among the heroes who stopped that day was a young paramedic named Chris Trokey. Yup. It was the premature baby.

”I didn’t know about until I went to the hospital and started talking about it, Dr. Shannon. And I was like, ”˜Oh my gosh, Dr. Shannon?’” Trokey recalled. ”That’s when I found out.”

Shannon was in the hospital for 45 days recovering from serious injuries as a result of the car accident, and while he was there Trokey visited and Shannon realized who he was.

”It’s amazing to watch them all grow up, but to have one come back in your life, on a day you really need it, that’s really incredible,” Shannon said.

Their story is so sweet I cannot stand it. It was just the sort of thing I needed to read today. Especially since Trokey has a little boy of his own, and now Dr. Shannon is his pediatrician, too.
