Playtex Recalls 3.6 Million Children’s Plates and Bowls Over Choking Concerns

A very popular and commonly used set of kids’ plates and bowls from Playtex has been recalled this week in the U.S. and Canada due to choking hazards. The plastic plates and bowls have cute cartoons drawn on them, but the drawings are sealed under a layer of plastic. The plastic can peel off the plate, and that’s reportedly causing a choking hazard because kids are putting the peeled-off bits of plastic in their mouths. At least four parents reported children choking on the plastic film.

The recall affects approximately 3.6 million plates and bowls in the U.S., and another 1.9 million more in Canada.

Playtex announced the recall on its website, and it looks like all plates and bowls with printed graphics on them are affected by the recall. They’re white plates and bowls with colorful rims, nonstick bottoms, and a cartoon design on them. They’ll probably look pretty familiar, because even if you didn’t own these specific plates, you probably owned something that looks a lot like them.

The plates have been sold since October 2009, and there are a lot of designs out there. Some of them include DC Super Friends, cars, superheroes, construction scenes, giraffes, princesses, etc. They were sold individually, or as part of sets.

Playtex notes that the recall does not apply to Toy Story 3 and Baby Einstein themed plates and bowls. It also doesn’t apply to any plates or bowls that don’t have pictures.

The plastic film has been separating from the dishes.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall is happening because the plastic layer over the picture can bubble off. 372 people have reported plastic bubbling up or peeling off their plates and bowls. 11 people have reported finding bits of the plastic in children’s mouths. Four children reportedly choked on a piece of the plastic.

Anybody with one of the plates or bowls should stop using it. Playtex is offering full refunds. The products were available in stores and online since October 2009, and they sold for between $2.50 for a single plate or bowl and around $15 for a full set.

You can call Playtex at 888-220-2075 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday for a refund, or find more recall information at playtexproducts.com.
