Mother Lies Upside Down For 10 Weeks To Avoid Miscarriage

It’s no secret that mothers will do anything for their children. Donna Kelly is one such mom. The 29-year-old British woman spent three month lying upside down on a hospital bed to avoid having a miscarriage.

Kelly, who has a 4-year-old son named Joshua, suffers from a “weak cervix,” which doctors believe caused her to miscarry at 23 weeks in 2009 and again in 2010 at 19 weeks. This time around, Kelly was given a cervical stitch at 14 weeks to strengthen the neck of the womb, but her cervix had re-opened at 23 weeks.

So doctors turned to basic physics. To alter he force of gravity on Kelly’s cervix, they had her lie in a bed tilted at a 45-degree angle, with her feet pointing upwards. This devoted mom ate, read, watched TV and socialized in a hospital bed for a whopping 10 weeks, getting up only to use the bathroom. (Her husband Mark Kelly, 32, and their son Josh would come by almost every evening for dinner and a little visit.)

I was surprised when she told me to lie in bed at a tilt but I was ready to give anything a try,” said Kelly, a former nurse. “It made me feel sick and I had a massive head rush at first, but after a couple of days my body adjusted and I soon got used to it.”

Professor Siobhan Quenby, who’s an expert in recurrent miscarriages, told The Mail Online that while the concept of keeping a woman at a tilt may sound strange, it’s very effective.

And, indeed, there’s a happy ending to this story. Kelly gave birth to a daughter, Amelia, six weeks prematurely via c-section. Amelia was small weighing just 4 pounds, 5 ounces but following two months in an incubator, she is finally home and is thriving.

“The hardest thing was spending so much time away from Joshua but three months away from him for the sake of giving him a sibling is worth it,” Kelly said. ‘The other day Joshua said to me, ‘Mummy, I love being a big brother.’ For me that makes it all worthwhile.”
