We love it! Like, really love it. It’s classic and strong and has a nice historical and literary background. There’s nothing wrong with more common names like Michael or Christopher, but there’s just something so cool about the name Atticus.

The name Atticus means “from Attica”. He was an important Roman literary figure named for the region around Athens. But most people recognize the name from Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Atticus Finch is the hero character in the book, father to Scout and Jem, and defender of Tom Robinson. Gregory Peck played Atticus in the film adaptation, and his portrayal of the character earned him the title of “Greatest Hero in American film.” It feels like maybe, with the events of the past year, the character of Atticus Finch and all he stands for really resonated with parents.

Atticus certainly isn’t a common name, but is it really all that unusual?

We’ve heard some REALLY out there baby names. And certainly, some names seem strange to some parents, while totally normal to others. Once upon a time, a name like River for a boy or Elliott for a girl would’ve seemed weird. But as more and more parents think outside of the box when it comes to baby names, unusual names are starting to make a comeback.
