The popularity of baby names is always changing. When I was a kid, I was never in a classroom that didn’t have a Jessica or Jennifer or Jonathan and that’s because parents in the mid-80s really seemed to like those particular J-names. As the Michaels and Amandas have grown up and come to have children of their own, they’ve come up with much different names, many rooted in popular culture. Nameberry recently released 2017’s most popular baby names thus far, and there are certainly lots of unexpected changes to the list.

Their info is obtained by checking out their website’s traffic data and seeing which names were viewed most often, so while this is a good way to zero in on name trends, it’s definitely not the is all be all (you’d have to check out social security’s data at the end of the year to be certain which names actually got used and which ones didn’t make the cut).

First, here’s a few fast facts from Nameberry: Asher is now the most popular baby name for boys, taking the place of Ezra (which may have gone down in popularity after that disastrous Pretty Little Liars finale…some of y’all know what I’m talking about). Meanwhile, Olivia is still the most popular name for a girl, with Amelia and Charlotte not far behind.

New to the boy’s list of hottest names are Theodore (Greek for “gift of god”) and Jasper (which means “treasurer” in Persian). As for the new names on the girl’s list, there’s Penelope, Evelyn, and another Roosevelt-related name: Eleanor. Oh, and by the way, Khaleesi totally made the top 100 names and my inner Game of Thrones geek is fangirling hard.

Now, on to the baby names! Read on, especially if you’re still working on picking names for your own babies:
