Justin Bieber Drags His Mom On Stage For An Endearing AMA Acceptance Speech

Justin Bieber momLast night, Justin Bieber had a big night at the American Music Awards. The teen took home three awards, and might have even reunited with his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. But it wasn’t just a big night for the young musician, it was also a big night for his mother, Pattie Mallette. The mom, whose been doing lots of press lately to promote her new autobiography coming out, walked the red carpet with her son, and then got pulled up on stage in an admittedly adorable acceptance speech.

When Bieber took home the award for Artist of the Year, beating out superstars like Rihanna, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, and Drake, he pulled his surprised mother right on stage with him. Then, while fumbling to put words together after an emotional night, Justin looked straight at his mom and said, “I wanted to thank you for always believing in me.” It was easy to see how heart-felt the moment was. And I have to admit that when this young man said, “I will always make you proud of me,” I got a little teary-eyed.

Justin acknowledge in his short speech how hard it is to grow up in the public eye. As a mom, I can’t imagine watching my child go through the criticism and gossip of the entertainment industry. But it does seem like Bieber has a loving and committed mother who wants to stand with him and help him through.

Obviously, Justin’s move of bringing his mother as his date is a well-established Hollywood ritual. It isn’t an awards show without mothers, fathers, grandparents, or children tagging along as the date to their famous family member. Angelina Jolie even brought her brother along. Remember that? However, this might be the first time in my memory when a winner has brought their mother up on stage to share the spotlight.

I’m not a huge Justin Bieber fan in general, but I have to admit that he was an extemely endearing young man last night. With an emotional performance and a sense of true gratitude for his mother, he handled what could have been a difficult awards show wonderfully. And if the rumors are true, he might have even gotten back together with his girlfriend after a very public break-up.

So for today, I’m going to say, “Good for Justin Bieber!” Not to mention, “Congratulations to the lady who raised him.” (Hey, I still contend that if she refers to herself as “Justin Bieber’s Mom” in her autobiography, I don’t have to remember her name either.)
