Cersei’s Iron Bank Mistake Could Cost Her Big on ‘Game of Thrones’

Warning: Contains spoilers for Season 7 of Game of Thrones: Things are finally starting to wind down a bit on Game of Thrones, at least as far as in the competition for said throne. With roughly half the original cast dead and buried, it’s all coming down to Cersei and Danaerys (OK, Euron is still around but GRRM wouldn’t do that to us, would he? And Jon, well, he may have already bent that knee in the cave…but I digress). Cersei is trying to play her cards right by cutting Dany’s force and growing her own. But Cersei’s potential Iron Bank mistake this last episode might cost her big in the fight for the throne.

Smart move or an Iron Bank mistake?

One Reddit user recently posted that Cersei may have made a grave mistake by paying off her debt to the Iron Bank in full. The user posits that every time Cersei makes a big play, it costs her big in the long run (see: using the Mountain to beat Oberyn resulted in losing Myrcella, blowing up the sept resulted in Tommen killing himself). As such, paying off her debt to the Iron Bank in full could mean that the Bank will no longer feel invested in her success.

In the scene, Tycho Nestoris of the Iron Bank makes it clear that the Bank doesn’t “bet” on the winner, but rather, they invest on the chosen victor. Nestoris also makes it clear that they’ll support the Iron Throne once the debt is paid (but that’s not necessarily supporting Cersei””especially if she doesn’t remain on the throne for much longer). So does that mean they’ll support Dany if she takes over?

Um, all that interest?

Nestoris also mentions how Cersei’s father, Tywin Lannister, never actually paid their debt in full. This could be a big indicator that the Bank isn’t too thrilled about the debt being fully paid, After all, Tywin paid hefty sums of interest on his loans, which the Bank was more than happy to collect on. Nestoris himself tells Cersei how much the Bank enjoyed those interest payments. Here’s the full theory (along with an additional spoiler of things that may come–you’ve been warned!)

So what do you think? Will the Lannisters paying their debts result in their undoing? Or might the Bank be fine with investing in them once more as Cersei promised she’d need funding for the coming war?
