Erykah Badu AKA ‘Badoula’ Wants To Be A Midwife

Soul sensation Erykah Badu is already a doula, and now she wants to be a midwife. That’s cool and all, but here’s the really awesome part: her patients call her “Erykah Badoula.” I love it!

Badu, who has three kids of her own (Seven, Puma and Mars) says she realized her calling after helping her best friend through her natural birth, reports the Toronto Sun.

That was in 2001 and, since then, Badu’s been working as a doula for free! and she’s also a spokesperson for the International Center for Traditional Childbearing. She helps keep laboring moms calm during their drug-free deliveries through Reiki and massage (do you think she ever sings to them, too?).

Now she’s working towards a certification in midwifery and, according to the Sun, she hopes to one day open birthing centers in inner cities.
