People have a lot of different opinions about breastfeeding. Some breastfeeding mothers nurse their own children and nobody else’s, but there are people out there nursing babies for other people, providing donor milk, or having their babies nursed by other women sometimes, and that’s all great, as long as the baby’s parents are aware of the situation and are OK with it. That was decidedly not the case at a daycare in North Carolina recently, where a mother discovered that a daycare employee was breastfeeding her son without her permission.
According to the New York Daily News, Kaycee Oxendine is a teacher at the Carrboro Early School as a pre-K teacher, and her 3-month-old baby is enrolled at the daycare there. Her baby was a little constipated, so one of the employees in the nursery reportedly told Oxendine that she was currently nursing her own baby, so she had plenty of milk, and asked Oxendine if she wanted her to try nursing him to cure the constipation. Oxendine said hell no, and she says she specifically told the woman twice not to breastfeed her son.
Still, after Oxendine went to take care of her own class, the daycare employee reportedly did lift up her shirt and nurse the baby, and she was caught on video doing it.
Oxendine is pissed, and understandably so. On top of the egregious personal violation involved, the daycare worker’s actions caused a medical emergency for her son, because he is lactose intolerant. He can’t handle the lactose in milk products, including in breast milk, and his mother says he wound up having to go to the emergency room with extreme vomiting due to the woman’s actions.
The daycare worker was, of course, fired as soon as the incident was reported to the school, but Oxendine says she intends to pursue criminal action against the woman.
“To me, a criminal act was committed against him,” she said. “Not only did you put your breast to my son, you also made my son sick because he’s lactose intolerant. So you’ve put something in his body that his body can’t digest.”
The woman in question was a childcare professional who was fully certified and had more than a decade of experience, and the school was astounded by the report. Oxendine says she’s not mad at the school, or the director. She’s just angry at the woman who decided to put her breast in the mouth of another woman’s baby despite having been told not to.
Police are reportedly investigating the incident as misdemeanor child abuse.
