Since news of the house of horrors kept by David and Louise Turpin broke earlier this month, more and more information about the couple has come to light. There is no excuse or reason that could ever justify the devastating abuses they inflicted on their 14 children. But a new interview with Louise’s brother may shed some light on their twisted motivations.
According to Billy Lambert, brother of Louise Turpin, she and husband David had plans for more children.
Billy told The Mirror that he last spoke to his sister on January 10, just days before their arrest. On January 14, the couple’s 17-year old daughter managed to escape the house, and call 911. When authorities arrived, they found 12 more children. Some of the children were chained and padlocked to their beds. All of the kids, ranging in age from 2 to 29, showed serious signs of starvation, neglect, and abuse. In fact, authorities were shocked to learn that 7 of the kids were over the age of 18; they were so emaciated that they appeared to be no older than 10.
Billy is adamant that the rest of the family had no idea what was going on behind closed doors. He used to visit the family often, but says the last time he was allowed to see the children was in 2002.
Louise Turpin always had plenty of excuses as to why Billy couldn’t visit, or see the kids on Skype. He said, “As technology grew I asked more and more to speak the children on things like Skype but Louise always had an excuse. She’d say, ‘Oh the computer is broke’ or ‘the camera isn’t working’ but what she was doing was stopping us from seeing inside their warped and twisted world.”
According to Billy, David and Louise had dreams of having their own reality TV show. In fact, he claims that was the reason the family moved to California. It was also one of the reasons they wanted to have even more children.
He said that Louise told him just last month that she and David were planning on having a 14th child. When he asked her why they would want to add another baby to their already large family, he says she told him of their desire to be on TV. “She used to say how they would be perfect for TV and would often mention they would be bigger than the reality show Kate Plus 8. She thought the world would be fascinated by their lives”, says in the interview.
David and Louise Turpin are currently in jail. They have both been charged with 12 counts each of torture, as well as 7 counts of abuse of an adult, 6 counts of child abuse or neglect, and 12 counts of false imprisonment. David has also been charged with one count of lewd act on a child under 14. Billy says he is disgusted by his sister and brother-in-law. He also expressed interest in adopting the youngest 3 Turpin children.
