‘Demand A Plan’ For Gun Control Is A Celebrity Endorsement That I Can Get Behind

After sitting through that ridiculous press conference, in which the NRA blamed gun violence on video games, television, and – wait for it – not enough guns, it was refreshing to see some familiar faces take a stand for common sense and against the talking points that gun proponents always use in the wake of any terrible tragedy involving their precious weapons of choice.

“Columbine.

Virginia Tech.

Tuscon.

Aurora.

Fort Hood.

Oak Creek.

Newtown.

How many more colleges? How many more classrooms? How many more movie theaters?  How many more houses of faith? How many more shopping malls? How many more street corners? How many more?

Enough. Demand a plan. Right now. As a mom. As a dad. As a friend. As a husband. As a wife. As an American. As a human being. For the children of Sandy Hook. No more lists of names.

It’s not too soon, it’s too late.

This is how the PSA begins, and honestly, I couldn’t agree more. The past week has certainly shown that there are polarizing issues that divide us as people, as a community, and as a nation. If it wasn’t obvious before, we now know that gun control is one of them. I understand that there are some who will never agree that tougher laws on gun ownership will change anything. It’s been made painfully obvious by those who insist armed guards in schools are the answer – that more guns are the answer to our escalating problem with violence in this country.

I just don’t get it. Which is why it is refreshing to see people with a hell of a lot more influence than myself get up and make a statement. It’s refreshing to hear that I am not alone in my utter confusion about our love affair with weapons and our boundless need to twist an element of the constitution that was supposed to guarantee freedom, into one that guarantees nothing but unrestricted chaos.

I agree. “It’s time for our leaders to act. Demand a plan. Right now.”

Enough.
