We Can All Sleep Better Tonight: Arrest Made In Attempted Abduction Of 10-Year-Old Girl

kidnapping 10-year-old girlEarlier today we wrote about the horrifying surveillance footage that shows a man attempting to abduct a 10-year-old girl as she walks hand in hand with her 2-year-old brother. As his sister falls to the ground and struggles to get away, the little boy screams. Thankfully, the would be kidnapper gives up and flees, leaving the pair shaken but safe.

Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter offered a $10,000 reward for the capture of this despicable man but today, he turned himself in to police. Carlos Figueroa-Fagot could not “walk, talk or breathe” after the video aired on news stations across the country. He’s since been charged with attempted kidnapping, indecent assault and unlawful restraint, among other crimes.

The fact that Figueroa-Fagot’s been caught doesn’t make the scene any less terrifying, but it’s reassuring to know he’s no longer out there on the streets. As for the little girl, “She has been a real trooper since the incident,” said Capt. John Darby, adding that she credits her little brother’s screams with saving her life.  (Can you imagine?)

I’m just grateful that this little girl knew to fight pack. Perhaps it was instinctive, or maybe it’s something her parents taught her; either way, it’s a reminder to us all to have the “stranger danger” talk with our children, as frightening as that may be.
