I Want Drew Barrymore To Be My Best Mom Friend

shutterstock_121706377Not sure what it is about Drew Barrymore that makes me love her so, but I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember. Her new role as a mom is making me love her even more. Barrymore opened up to Oprah this week and responded to some tough questions about her childhood – and a wild past that her daughter, Olive, will inevitably be able to Google one day.

If there is anything that I am grateful for, it is that iPhones and social media weren’t invented yet when I was going through some of my more tumultuous years. I do plan on being transparent with my children, but honestly I’d like to be able to leave some of the more unsavory parts of my past out. And I can – because they aren’t accessible on the Internet for all to see. Celebrities have never had that luxury. Drew’s past struggles with the limelight will all be out there for her daughter to uncover. She handles the idea with grace and common sense, though:

“I will absolutely instill in her that you cannot be ashamed of the journey that it took to get where you are if you are proud of yourself,” the actress tells Oprah Winfrey in Sunday’s episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter. “But I will also try and instill in her that I did not have guidance and that is why I lived my life that way.”

How do you accept the realization that your kids will be exposed to all sorts of things they will need to navigate, while at the same time trying not to be a total hypocrite about the choices you made as an adolescent – and the importance of letting children learn to make the right decisions? Don’t ask me. It seems Barrymore has the right idea though. It doesn’t surprise me – she’s been pretty wise and down to earth about other issues regarding her pregnancy.

I think she’s on the right track. Being honest with your kids about your own past indiscretions is smart – especially when all of that information is at their fingertips.

The interview airs tonight on OWN.
