Father Of Indian Rape Victim Reveals Her Name To ‘Give Courage To Other Women’

In a country where victims and their families are shamed by rape – Jyoti Singh Pandey’s father showed the world what a loving, courageous, proud father he is by demanding his daughter’s name be made public.

“We want the world to know her real name.”

“My daughter didn’t do anything wrong, she died while protecting herself.”

“I am proud of her. Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks. They will find strength from my daughter.”

From Reuters:

Indian law generally prohibits the identification of victims of sex crimes. The law is intended to protect victims’ privacy and keep them from the media glare in a country where the social stigma associated with rape can be devastating.

The father later told Reuters he had no objections to the media using his daughter’s name, but did not elaborate.

Since the release of her name hours ago, many have taken to Twitter in support of her father’s decision and to help secure her legacy.

When I think of the way this woman spent the last weeks of her life, all I can do is weep. I weep for her, but also the state of the world and the violence that women are subjected to daily. I know it is no woman’s desire to have this as her legacy – but she will have a legacy that provides a beacon of hope to the women of India and women everywhere.

The message is loud and clear – stop violence and crimes against women by any means necessary.

Jyoti Singh Pandey. The world says your name today.
