This 120 Second ‘Lights Out’ Movie Is So Scary You Will Sleep With The Lights On For Days

Lights Out Video UGH Internet! Here I was, minding my own mumsy biz, and I came across this short film that truly scared me, which isn’t easy to do because I’m old and jaded and I find many things based in fiction so not scary. I love horror movies and all that but I haven’t been truly scared by one in ages and this short film by director David F. Sandberg changed all that. Eep. I hope there are lots of people out there Rick Rolling people with it because it truly made me jump and freaked me out.

WARNING: It’s scary

Lights Out – Who’s There Film Challenge (2013) from David F. Sandberg on Vimeo.

Argh! It’s scary but I will probably show it to my kids because they also love horror and it’s not gratuitous or gory and I think it fabulously illustrates how you can effectively tell a story in a very limited time frame.

The movie was the top winner for best director in the BC Horror Challenge and now I’m going to have to watch all of them to see the other entrants. And remember to sleep with my hall light on because this little movie truly scared me and I’m a baby and I’m pretty sure if I turn the lights on in the middle of the night something like that creepy thing will be standing next to my bed. Hold me?

Oh Man, I watched the grand prize winner and if there is one thing I do not like and do not want it’s talking dolls. I hope I have effectively ruined your morning now.

Feel free to tell me if you were also scared or if you now hate me and want to discuss sunshine, puppies and kittens.

Eve, you should have posted this later tonight so everyone watches it in the dark, at night, while their significant others are at the gym, while their children are in their rooms, making clanking sounds, and the neighbor’s dog whimpers, and the winds causes the tree branches to tap the windows

I ALWAYS WANT TO DISCUSS KITTENS BUT THIS SHIT IS WEAK. Get on my horror level!

EVERYTHING LOLOLOLOL :( BUT RLY I am a horror snob and elitist. It takes really scary shit to scare me. WANT A MOVIE LIST??? >:D

    • Lian

      Movie list yesyesyes!

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

Okay here is my list of most recent AWESOME horror films. Not all are “scary” but all are AWESOME HORROR FILMS.
      I shall provide trailers!!!
      Wake Wood
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmHezbD4V50
Extra points for being in creepy parts of Ireland. Maybe it is scarier when you’ve been to towns like that.
The whole concept behind Wake Wood could make an awesome discussion on Mommyish.

      Kill List
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqkqF–v1tg
A slow burner. But I LOVE slow burners. Very traditionally British thriller/horror style. Amazing. The end, the creepy factor, it’s all worth it. Pay SUPER close attention the whole film or you will miss crucial things. I loved this one.

      We Are What We Are
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPG9kZmEwcs
This was a nice surprise, with low ratings, that I hadn’t heard of. I wound up liking it a lot. A bit obvious with how dark it is and is gonna be, but worth a watch.

As for scariest and best ever, I CAN COMPILE ANOTHER LIST.

    • Lian

Thank you, awesome! More list yesyesyes!

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

      LIST TWO, FAVORIIIIITES.

This is my favorite film of all time. Watch all of these with SUBTITLES! No dubs because dubs are HILARIOUS:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQV7ejqpbPc
The color, acting, cinematography, everything, is perfect and beautiful. The story is amazing and the twist makes watching it again a TOTALLY different film (and the dinner scene 1000x more awkward). And the scares ACTUALLY get me because they take you PAST the “safe point” and there are NO visual or musical “cues” like most horror films have to amp you up before the “scare”. It’s perfect. BEST MOVIE EVER. NEVER WATCH THE HORRIFIC AMERICAN REMAKE WHICH SLAUGHTERED ALL THAT IS GOOD ABOUT THIS FILM :(

      Martyrs
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNpDiQimK6U
Not sure if actually a horror film, but it will fuck you up and it is brilliant and it is art. And it makes you think a LOT.

      Frontier(s)
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otRtGXeq9qI
Another French film. It looks like another Texas Chainsaw set up but it does not disappoint. So terrifying for so many reasons. I am really loving the whole wave of French “Extreme” Films. Another one that stays with you.

      I HAVE MORE.

    • Lian

Thank you, this will keep me entertained for a while! The trailer for the last one was hilarious.

    • gothicgaelicgirl

      O god Martyrs!!!
That and Irreversible messed me up!
      Antichrist is awesome too!

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

I need to rewatch Irreversible because it has been years, and Antichrist I need to try and watch again because I didn’t get through it the first time for some reason!

    • gothicgaelicgirl

      I LOVE Antichrist.
      I LIVE for freaky films.
I take it you’ve seen Dumplings and Audition?

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

Audition yes! I remember i couldn’t find Dumplings years ago but I’ll look again!

    • LiteBrite

Okay, so a quick rant on Martyrs.

I waited FOREVER to get this one from Netflix. Finally it came, and my husband SENT.IT.BACK because he didn’t think it was in our queue and was sent to us in error! So now I have to wait for it again.

      He’s lucky to be alive.

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

I forced mine to watch Martyrs and I think it really messed with his head! Poor lad.

    • keelhaulrose

I’m not a horror snob, I’m not a fan of the genre at all because I find it unbelievable and over the top, and I found this weak, too. I actually looked it til that thing at the end because it seemed plausible, but I wound up laughing at the climax.

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

The big reveal made me throw my phone in anger.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

You stink. remind me to spam your next article saying how WEAK it is

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

CONSIDERING THE TOPIC THAT MEANS YOU CHALLENGE ME TO A PARTY DUEL, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, GET THEE TO IRELAND AND WE DRINK.

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

I’m gonna watch it again now on the big screen of my PC. But the reveal…I wanted something scarier than SPOILER ALERT “dude who probably made the film in white contacts and good makeup”

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

asfasfbhaklsfjhkawhfkhawkf THIS ISN’T THE ONE I SAW BEFORE I TAKE IT ALL BACK

    • Sri

I really really enjoy horror. I will watch any and every horror movie offered to me. My Netflix once suggested Gory Canadian Horror Movies with a Strong Female Lead. There was one movie in the entire category. I’m a huge wuss, though. Like, I will watch a movie and be creeped out for a week, but still keep watching more movies, so I’m in a constant state of creeped out by several movies at the same time.

Lights out, I noped out at about 1:15, took a breath and decided to finish, and I chuckled at the big reveal. The end kind of ruins it for me. Ugh, I don’t want to spoil it, but I feel like it would have been better if it had grabbed her hand when she reached for the power strip, roll credits. There’s just such a fine line in body horror (is it rightly body horror? It’s like right on the body horror creature feature line for me) in which it’s not laughable.

Play Time was less scary, imo. I don’t know. It just didn’t hit the right nerve with me. I really hate dolls, too, but it’s the uncanny valley thing, where they’re so close to being human that it creates a revulsion.

    • keelhaulrose

Honestly, I do get scared by certain things I see in movies or on TV, but nothing close to the over-the-top horror flicks like these. I remember once I called my mother after watching an episode of Criminal Minds (where the perp was keeping living women as dolls via a drug that kept them conscious and paralyzed) begging her to tell me that no such drug existed because that drug became my new terror. I know Criminal Minds is fake and a lot of their stuff is exaggerated, but not so much that you can’t imagine it happening to someone because a lot of it HAS happened to someone before. It’s not that hard to find real-life examples of some of the things on that show, and that sort of thing scares the shit out of me. The horror stuff is far-fetched enough I find it too ridiculous to be horrifying, but things that are in the realm of possibility are the things that will keep me up at night.
I’ll give a real-life example of I think where this became my problem; my mother, who is an awesome mother most of the time, showed my tender, 7 year old self ‘Jaws’ the night before we were going to the beach. Guess who wouldn’t go within twenty feet of the water? Ever since then I think the real world has been all the scary I need.

  • Kay_Sue

I must not have had enough caffeine. I am a wuss and I was not too terrified by it…the end was a little surprising, admittedly…

    • Megan Zander

      Then you’re not a wuss, you’re a badass

    • Kay_Sue

Naw, I really am a wuss. You have no idea, I promise. The weirdest things scare the shit out of me.

    • Robotic Socks

They could have developed the character more

Like for instance, what’s her name?

  • http://wtfihaveakid.blogspot.ca/ jendra_berri

I just read a synopsis to prevent myself from watching. I have this thing where if I watch scary shit, I don’t sleep ever again and then die.

    • Scarlet

This also happens to me, but I didn’t even read the synopsis just in case.

  • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

You know what y’all I was doing some very important research watching T&T and studying the effects of cardboard boxes on cats but now I’m up here in my office staring at this thread and hitting refresh.

    VERY. IMPORTANT. RESEARCH.

    • Megan Zander

That grey and white kitty is so cute

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

That is Lucipurr, Kitten of the Damned.

I hate you for that gif. It’s like my worst nightmares come to life.

  • Alex Lee

The duct tape did not fix the problem!

    now I am REALLY scared.

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

This gif reminds me of the creepy ads with the talking animals, anyone remember those?! They were on G4 or something :(

  • Mallory

Aaaaaah I want to watch it but I don’t want to watch it. But I’m gonna have to watch it or else I’ll sit here thinking about it. But if I DO watch it I’ll never be able to sleep again. HELP

    • Lauren Victoria

      Watch it!

    • Mallory

OK I WATCHED IT NOW I AM GOING TO RUN UP MY STAIRS LIKE USAIN BOLT TONIGHT WHEN I GO TO BED

  • cesp

I’m a short horror junkie….FEWDIO Horror: Bedfellows, seriously watch it.

  • http://mother--bored.tumblr.com/ Aimee Ogden

I always feel the need to watch scary things even though they will give me nightmares forever. I watched this one out of the corner of my eye, through my fingers, and I still shrieked a little at the end. I’M NOT PROUD.

    • Mallory

Sooo you’re telling me I should not watch this in my office which I share with another person?

  • Megan Zander

I’m a wuss, but I’m curious. Can we get a synopsis up in here?

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

      Please watch eeeet

    • Megan Zander

THIS IS PEER PRESSURE AND I DONT HAVE TO ! Ugh fine fine fine watching now.

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

THAT WAS TEN MINUTES AGO ARE YOU OKAY

    • Megan Zander

No! I got 30 seconds in, turned it off and called my horror immune BFF to watch it for me and tell me what happened. She’s like you, She said it’s not scary, but I’m alone with two sleeping babies and all I can think off is that shadow in the hallway! Looking at this picture to stay calm. Seriously need to pee, but have no weapons to take to the bathroom with me.

    • Lauren Victoria

Megan, if you don’t watch it I will tell all of these internet strangers embarrassing stories from our youth..

    • Megan Zander

Laur! You’re calling me out in public! #howdareyou

    • Megan Zander

Hate you so much right now. Fine. FINE. But if I can’t sleep your preggo ass is staying up with me tonight, I don’t care how tired you are.

    • Megan Zander

Nope. I can’t. I got 30 seconds in, saw whatever THAT was and I can go no further. Please please tell me it’s like her drunk roommate or something.

  • LiteBrite

I thought it was pretty cool. I wasn’t particularly terrified, although the end creeped me out, but then again I’m sitting in my home office with all the lights on and a 16lb cat to protect me. (Yeah right…)

I’d probably feel much differently watching this with all the lights off at night when I’m home alone.

  • Ursi

I love how she goes to sleep after that, like, welp, no problem here!
it’s scary because people in horror movies are dumb. Get a hotel room, lady.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

wait.. the lady in the movie should get a room? zomg she cannot she cannot walk past that thing plus hotel rooms are $$$$

    • Ursi

Well I’d at least go sleep in my car or something. Preferably in a parking lot far away. Not going to dick around the house while some creeper is loose in the hallway.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

God, this is all just so easy for you.. first you have to trap the creeper and take all the duct tape off the outlets and then walk to the car, and who knows how cold it is outside, sheesh, be realistic here, you need to stop ghoul shaming this lady

    • Ursi

Totally ghoul shaming everyone who sleeps in the house with a monster. Take the shame! Granted, there ought to be some kind of Dan Aykroyd hotline to call for shit like this bc I haven’t thought further ahead than my car…

  • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham
  • CMJ

Guess who made me watch this shiz???

  • http://sarahhollowell.com/ Sarah Hollowell

OH GOD I’VE WATCHED 28 SECONDS AND I’M ALREADY LIKE NOOOOOOOOPE

    • http://sarahhollowell.com/ Sarah Hollowell

1:17 I AM REGRETTING MY ENTIRE LIFE

    • http://sarahhollowell.com/ Sarah Hollowell

      GOD WHY

  • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

Light’s Out is the only link I saw when I began flamboyantly declaring my badassery, I’m off to hug my cats after the second link there to the grand prize winner.

    • Megan Zander

I was on the fence about watching the grand prize winner, but if you’re afraid of it I’m guaranteed to soil myself, so I’m going to pass.

  • Maggie May

I watched Lights Out before, it was super creepy although the thing at the looks like a deranged muppet. (I paused and got a good look at it. Things are less scary that way, and I was the only adult home that night).

I’ll have to watch the other one after the little one goes down for his nap.

  • AnastasiaMcNally

EVE I AM ON A NIGHT SHIFT RIGHT NOW AND I HAVE FOUR MORE HOURS IN THE DARK HOW DARE YOU!

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

      #HDY

  • Valerie

Huh. It didn’t really scare me. But my husband works at night one night a week and always has so I am very used to being home alone and it takes a lot to get me rattled. Entertaining, though. :-)

  • Jallun-Keatres

Um… wut? Not scared in the slightest…

  • Sarah

    WHY DID I WATCH THAT.

  • shorty_RN

Brb, gonna go turn on every light in my apartment even though it’s daytime.

  • Marianna

Eve are you sure you want to sleep with your hallway lights on, what if they turn off by themselves?

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

      :( why you scare meeeeeeeee?

    • Marianna

Because you scared meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! And I have to sleep alone in my house in the middle of nowhere. Seriously, less than three minutes and it scared the shit out of me.

  • Megan

I watched this the other day and I was more annoyed by the moron just leaving her bedroom door open after seeing something creepy in her fucking hallway.

  • 21foot house

I kind of felt like the end let me down.
The beginning part was kinda scary because I have this robe that I hang by my door that when I shut the lights out and take my glasses off looks like it moves five feet closer to my bed so I can totally do the light on light off thing (and I admit, sometimes I do, because my wee little brain just needs to be sure) but then after that I was all “meh” :/

  • Pappy

Apparently my mom is way more hardcore than me. I was peeing myself with terror watching these. She sat through both and called them “boring.”
Out-badassed by my chubby, 50-something mother. How lame. :-(

  • That_Darn_Kat

I agree with a lot of posters, it was amazing up until the end. I think something else needed to be done for the reveal, that just wasn’t scary.

  • Boots

Holy balls! That’s got my blood pressure right up! Where are my kittens dammit!?
