WBC’s Fred Phelps Dies On First Day Of Spring And International Happiness Day

Fred Phelps, leader of the infamous hate-spewing, funeral-picketing Westboro Baptist Church is dead. As you can imagine, there are a lot of people who really don’t care.

I’m not judging anyone who responds to his death with glee or hatred. I don’t think spewing hate is necessarily the right response, because it’s what he did and was comfortable with, and frankly he would probably get a kick out of that kind of thing. Clearly he enjoyed the hate he elicited from others or he would not have spent his life the way he did.

It’s been reported that he was a very lonely man at the end of his life and I’m not surprised. Seeing many angry Twitter responses to his life doesn’t surprise me either; you reap what you sow. But let’s just get it all out of our systems today, because this man doesn’t deserve even a moment more of our time. He dedicated his life to spewing hate and ignorance and repeatedly caused stress and grief to those who were mourning.

I’d like to point out that he died on the first day of spring and the International Day of Happiness. He would have hated that. The universe has a good sense of humor.

A new season. It seems fitting somehow. Hopefully it will be a good one.

I won’t celebrate his death. That’s the kind of thing his church did, and I strive to be the opposite of what they are and what they represent.

      • JLH1986

I won’t celebrate…but I won’t mourn either. What I will do is go back to the filing I’ve been avoiding all day. Any takers to come do this filing? I’ll buy beer!

      • Mystik Spiral

Shoot I have a huge pile of my own filing that’s been getting bigger and bigger… Also I don’t drink. But you have fun! :)

    • SA

How fitting. Hopefully the church will disband and not continue his work.

      • JLH1986

I believe he was booted from the church by his estranged son…so I think we have a while yet before that “church” tanks.

      • Kay_Sue

Supposedly because he advocated a more compassionate approach between members within the church…

      • JLH1986

I’m not sure he knew what the word compassion meant…

      • Mystik Spiral

I don’t think his estranged son had anything to do with his excommunication. He’s got a daughter who’s just like him, so I imagine she’s the one who pulled the trigger on that. A couple of his boys distanced themselves from the family and from the “cause” at an early age, and good for them.

I will now take a moment to say good riddance to bad rubbish and go on with my day in the camp of those who don’t care that the fucker is dead. I hope I never have to spare another thought for him, I don’t need to waste my time that way.

      • JLH1986

Yea I thought he was foul so I didn’t do much digging but I remember something from earlier this week. Either way one of his bigoted children will be sure to keep the hate alive. Hopefully they figure out before they are 84 and on their deathbeds.

I read Lauren Drain’s autobiography. She is a non-Phelps whose parents joined WBC when she was a teenager, and she managed to escape the cult as a young adult. It was an interesting read.

      • JLH1986

Really? I’ll have to add that to my “to read” list on goodreads!

May his family and friends have good memories of him. May those he hurt be relieved of their suffering and free to move on.

    • LiteBrite

I’m not celebrating his death, but I’m also not particularly sad he’s gone either.

      • Pappy

Not gonna lie… Me and my mom danced around our kitchen to “Ha Ha You’re Dead” by Greenday. And “The Hell Of It” from Phantom of the Paradise. Because, seriously, fuck that guy.

I credit Phelps for bringing this nation together. We can all hold hands and agree that this man was garbage.

      • Kay_Sue

It’s pretty bad when the KKK officially releases a statement saying “No, we are in no way affiliated with these jokers.”

When the KKK thinks you are hurting their image….you’re officially the scum of the earth.

Some people’s idea of closure is urinating on a particular spot in a particular graveyard. For others, it may be something more graphic.

I do not know if Fred Phelps will be buried in a cemetary, but if he is, I’m wondering if some companies will provide free apple juice (a healthy diuretic) and free condoms at the entrance.

      Because closure.

      • CrazyFor Kate

Don’t forget tap shoes. I’m sure tons of people have worked out a special routine for the occasion.

      • Alex Lee

Someone is probably making a Fred Phelps Funeral Playlist.

I’m hoping for lots of Village People and “It’s Raining Men”

      • Mystik Spiral

Showtunes, Cher, and lots and lots of Adele.

      • Paul White

seriously, why expend the energy? he’s dead, he doesn’t care

      • Kelly

You could say the same about mourning. Dealing with death is never about the deceased, it’s about the people who are still alive.

      • Paul White

Yeah but I’m not down with runing his family’s griefs. Just cause they’re jackasses doesn’t mean we all need to be. If you want to hold a private “Ding-Dong The Witch is Dead” party go for it.

      • Kelly

Thank you for your permission to go for it. I plan on it.

Not sure why I would need your permission to do that though…

    • Kelly

Yay! This just made my day! Thanks for dying while I’m recovering from surgery shit licker, I needed the pick me up!

    • Anony-Mom

Hey, pro-tip: let’s not fight hate with more hate. It is counter-productive. Same reason people are having to remind everyone not to protest at his funeral and the such. If we are as big jerks as he was in response to his death, we’re just as bad as he was.

      • Mystik Spiral

Nobody is falling over themselves saying how much he’ll be missed or anything, but I see very little hate in the comments here.

      • Anony-Mom

Eh, I’m talking the tweet noted above re: “WELL THIS IS DISAPPOINTING” to not be able to protest his funeral. Or the person commenting above on tap-dancing on his grave.

      • Mystik Spiral

Gotcha. Yeah a couple of those tweets were silly and counter-productive. I liked the first one from American Atheists.

      • Anony-Mom

Yes, that one was good – because it would be truly productive in a real societally positive way. You know, showing love? That’s the best sort of response right now. That’s a REAL “slap-in-the-face” sort of thing. Not actual hate-hate.

      • Bethany Ramos

        Agree!

    • whiteroses

I have a hard time feeling sad about this. What I am going to do is donate a small amount of money to an LGBTQ charity in honor of Phelps. I can only hope that the world is a little kinder now.

    • anon

And the world gets a little less hateful. If I believed in hell I’d take pleasure in the thought of this maggot squirming in it. If only he could have taken his entire braindead brood with him.

    • XDXDXD

Fuck yea fuck Fred Phelps that stupid bitchass mofo

    • George Vreeland Hill

      Glad he is gone.

      George Vreeland Hill

    • Nancy

Too cowardly to have a funeral or reveal where this hateful bum is buried!!!!! I find that particularly fitting, that they have to hide the body.

    • Tom Beardmore

It is also worth mentioning that Fred Phelps died not only on the first Day of Spring and International Happiness day, but it was also the one-year anniversary of the Equality House, located across the street from the WBC compound.
