No Amanda Palmer, You Can’t Compare Slavery To Nasty Bigoted Tweets Sent To Macklemore

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 7.31.37 AM12 Years A Slave was one of the most moving films I have ever seen. It was amazingly difficult to watch, and even though it did have an semi-uplifting ending and I could be amazingly awed by the performances of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o – the movie still left me incredibly sad. It’s a wonderful movie, the acting, directing, cinematography, it deserves all of the awards but it’s a damn hard movie, and one that will move you to tears and make you angry and make you think about slavery and the ramifications it still has today. Do you know how sometimes movies make you feel like you are in church? That some movies deserve to be respected and contemplated? That’s how it makes most people feel.

Unless you are Amanda Palmer.

Now, for those of you unfamiliar with that drama, after Macklemore performed at the Grammy awards and did a touching wedding ceremony with 33 couples, both gay and straight, there were a lot of homophobic and awful tweets directed towards him and his performance.

But it in NO WAY can that even be compared to 12 Years A Slave, or slavery, or the fact that 4 million African American men, women and children were used and abused and tortured as slaves before abolition. Or as I said on The Twitter:

I’m not even sure how you can make this comparison, or as I also said on Twitter:

It sucks that Macklemore got some nasty tweets for his nice little song about equality. But to compare it to the excrutiating suffering that slaves went through as depicted in Steve McQueen‘s movie? Whaaaaaat?

My kids have not seen 12 Years A Slave yet. They aren’t old enough, due to the graphic content and the fact they are still too young to give this movie the respect and thought it deserves. But I’m starting to think a lot of people aren’t mature enough to watch this movie, especially when their takeaway from it is so racially tone-deaf and cringingly misguided. Yeah, it sucks a rich popstar got some nasty tweets for his Grammy performance, but in no way can it even compare to a historical movie about the harrowing experience Solomon Northup went through.

It’s disgusting that gay people are subjected to prejudice and harassment and at times horrific crimes are committed against them due to their sexuality. But racism and bigotry are two totally different discussions, at least in this case.  When Macklemore gets bigoted tweets, he doesn’t suffer any consequences other than maybe being annoyed and angry at the tweets he gets. When black people are the recipients of racism, it affects their career paths and earnings and a million other things, including getting beaten by police or shot when they are trying to make their way home in a neighborhood.  For Palmer to try and make a correlation between slavery and ugly Tweets just makes me thunk my head against my desk.

Just to play devil’s advocate, I don’t THINK that she was referring to feeling bad for Macklemore, but for the beautiful couples who were married and are now receiving hate mail and death threats.

  • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

I don’t think she meant to compare it that way either. I do think there are far more poignant and less confusing current comparisons to make…hate crimes are still a thing.

I love you guys, but I refuse to listen to the Amanda Palmer didn’t mean it that way arguments. She said what she did.

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

And we loves you. I will be watching this story develop today. /popcorn

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

Also holy crap at this linked blog.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

Yeah I may give almost anyone else a pass for just a dumbs way of tying to unrelated things together, but she is a doozy

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

Yeah, some of these posts are in the sorta…”you are taking social justice a LITTLE far there, buddy” zone. I don’t know enough about Palmer to comment, I could write a thesis on Die Antwoord and K-pop though!

  • elle

At first my jaw kind of dropped but then I remember Amanda Palmer is the worst kind of attention seeker. She is just a really terrible human being, says anything for shock value, and makes KKK jokes to seem edgy. So it’s disgusting, offensive but ultimately unsurprising.

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

I did like her letter to the Daily Mail but I don’t know much else about her.

  • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

I also wanted to add I used to resent Macklemore because there are SO many openly gay rappers of color rapping about being gay but they get zero recognition and he shoots to fame and gets all these pats on the back for being an ally. Then I realized it’s not his fault that America isn’t ready to hear that gay is okay from anyone other than a straight white man. It’s America’s fault. Society’s fault. And that makes me want to crawl under my desk and cry and listen to “Thrift Shop” on repeat while whispering, “I’m sorry, I directed my hatred at the wrong person.”

    • Tinyfaeri

Well, Macklemore did get the Colbert Bump, so maybe the other rappers need to go on Colbert Report?

    • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

I would love that so much

    • Tinyfaeri

He probably takes suggestions! And he does love giving the bump to, well, anything and everything.

    • Cee

Exactly! Im NOT a big Macklemore fan, but all this hate is unnecessary, petty and lazy. Its the same with all the hate to Jennifer Lawrence for beating Lupita Nyong’o. After all, they did not give the awards to themselves. We never question the people who hand the awards, the voters and ultimately why America isn’t ready.
We rather spend our time name calling artists and high fiving the person that can say the best Macklemore joke rather than ask serious questions to the right people.

  • Annonymiss

Amanda Palmer is a tit. No getting around that. She is the worst exemplary of the white woman social justice warrior trope.

  • gothicgaelicgirl

Is it bad I still love Amanda Palmer’s music?

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

No, it’s your opinion, I am not a fan just because she has said so many hateful things

    • gothicgaelicgirl

      O I agree.
I do believe you can enjoy a musician’s work and still consider them to be a massive cunt.

I love Metallica but James Hetfield is the living embodiment of ponciness.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

I LOVE this discussion, I wan an talk about this all the time. I think Woody allen is a total creep, I love some of his movies.and so on and so forth

    • gothicgaelicgirl

      O agreed!!!
I LOVE Roman Polanski but that man has all kinds of wrong!!
I do believe what happened Sharon Tate messed up whatever was left of that poor man’s mind.
Still, off the scale creepy factor…

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

Yeah, Polanski is banned in my house.

    • gothicgaelicgirl

sad what happened but in fairness, he should’ve gotten help rather than go crazy and kiddie-creeping

    • Rachel Sea

That twatwaffle and I go to the same brewpub pretty regularly. Every once in a while a young fan will approach him for an autograph, and he is SUCH a dick about it. I don’t care who you are, if a 10 year old comes up to you and tells you he loves your music and wants to be a musician and ask for an autograph, you do not blow him off.

    • gothicgaelicgirl

      thank you!!!!
i hate how anyone who makes it big thinks they are above being kind!
Thankfully all my other musical experiences were fantastic. I managed to meet all of Dragonforce and they were so lovely, the lead keytar player gave me his belt when I admired it and they gave me a lift home when my wallet was stolen!

I notice most rock bands are great for responding to fans. I asked the sound engineer at an Amon Amarth concert could I pleasey pleasey please possibly have the setlist after the concert? (a trick my mam taught me, buy the engineer a drink, ask nicely and at the start. everyone will be asking afterwards)
he said he didn’t have a hard copy, just a digital copy on the laptop.

I thanked him anyway and at the end of the show, he pulled me aside and asked us (partner and me) to wait.
When everyone had left, the SINGER came out with a signed setlist!
The engineer had told him I’d asked for one, so he printed it and signed one for me!

      That took NO effort!

  • Kay_Sue

So last week, we talked about how Colorado had some legislation on the ballot to require premarital counseling. I think we should build on that idea and require any rising star to attend sensitivity training.

I think a couple hundred hours of it might do the trick….

  • Limsky

Macklemore is using gays to be famous

  • missiemeghan

Who the hell is Amanda Palmer?

  • Rachel Sea

FFS, yeah, individuals can be racist against white people, but seeing as how there is no such thing as institutionalized racism against white people, it seriously does not fucking matter. And you know what? Macklemore is almost certainly a star because he is white. A black dude singing the same songs would just be another thug to your average rap-hating-except-for-Macklemore-and-Justin-Timberlake white person. Macklemore can go sob into his white, straight, cis-male priveledged fistfuls of sweaty money if his feelings were actually hurt in the slightest.

  • ChickenKira

As much as I like Amanda Palmer’s music, that girl is far from the brightest crayon in the box.

  • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

Blargh, should I add the other ones?

  • Jessica

Her follow up tweets also sound like she wasn’t referring to the wedding, but to the fact that Macklemore got hate tweeted because he is winning rap grammys : “there was a race-fueled pile-on because people thought he was unqualified to beat out black artists. it just… RT @punkypeggy Macklemore?”

  • http://ultimatemamacat.tumblr.com/ Hana Graham

    Yes!! I’m all confused.

  • elle

Probably, just to clarify the situation.

  • courtneth

Yeah I just read the added tweets and it changes everything! I assumed she was referring to the gay wedding backlash, not that he was getting crap for being a white rapper.

  • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

    added

  • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

we can all cry for the poor white filthy rich pop star!

  • courtneth

Really she couldn’t think of a better example of modern racism?

  • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

haha, she was trying to be culturally relevant because the oscars are coming up?

  • courtneth

So maybe now her name will come up when they talk about the film like, “you know Amanda Palmer made a very astute observation comparing slavery to the modern struggle of a white man who receives awards in a black-dominated music genre.”

  • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I wanna know relate everything important in the world to pop stars. Schindler’s List is a good movie and it reminds me of Katy Perry

  • courtneth

Totally! Her struggle to decide whether she should tell her boyfriend she kissed a girl makes me think of how Schindler struggled with deciding to help the Jews.

  • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

    hahaha
