8 Things To Help You Out Of Your Winter, Funky Mommy Rut RIGHT NOW

We all have our moments when life becomes overwhelming and routine becomes rut. It’s almost the end of January, so no one is filled with the hope of sticking to a New Year’s resolution anymore. The holidays are over. It’s cold everywhere – this is the funkiest time of year.

Maybe I’m just prone to the seasonal blues, but I’ve found myself in a little bit of a rut. I’m usually content to just ride it out and soothe myself with chocolate – but that behavior generally hasn’t shown to be too effective in the past. So this year, I’m switching it up and actually making an attempt to cheer myself up. Here’s a few things I’ve been doing that are actually making me feel a little better.

1. Revisit that life-changing book you read in college.

Everyone has one of these, right? Mine was The Pilgrimage, by Paulo Coelho. Guess what? It was just as good the second time around, almost 15 years later.

2. Buy a great lipstick.

Bright red lipstick makes me feel fantastic. This may sound totally stupid – but don’t knock it until you try it.

3. Meditate for a few minutes a day.

I talked about Calm.com last week – but in case you missed it, go there. I’m listening to it as I write this – and I’m forcing myself to take a couple two-minute breaks a day. The site has a timer, soothing music and really cool imagery.

4. Try a cleanse.

I know, I know – these are the worst. We’re supposed to think that, right? Only – they really aren’t. If you’re done breastfeeding look into one. I did the Clean Program (not the pricey packaged one – the juice at home one) and I felt like a new person at the end of it. I lost 14 pounds and broke my caffeine and sugar addiction. As soon as I’m done breastfeeding I’m doing this again.

5. Go to this website.

My Body Gallery is a site that lets users plug in their measurements and see what real women their size look like. Sometimes we reduce ourselves to a number on a scale and truly forget what we look like. It’s really nice to see other women your own size and realize how great they look.

6. Bring clothes to your local woman and children’s shelter.

This is a no-brainer. If you are parent you probably have  bunch of clothes to donate. Sometimes a little perspective goes a long way.

7. Call a friend and give an honest report on the state of your life.

Have you ever found yourself in a rut and realized absolutely no one knows you’re in one because you haven’t told a soul? I think sometimes we try to make our lives look more together than they are – at the expense of our own sanity. Call a good friend. Today.

8. Buy one of these.

I don’t know about you, but some good music always makes me feel better. Buy this portable blue tooth speaker. It’s affordable, waterproof and you can stick it in your shower and get your solo-performance on. You’re going to convince yourself you hear a baby crying the entire time you’re in there anyway – so you may as well drown out the imaginary noise.

I thought it was a butt plug.

      • Maria Guido

Yeah – that would have been way better than singing in the shower – where is my head???

That’s where I thought it was going too!

I really love meditating, I do it every night before bed for 10 minutes. I thought it was hokey at first, but it has helped so much. I’m a believer!

    • Natasha B

Yes. I’ve been feeling that the last week mostly. I’m planning in doing a whole crap load of Pinterest spa day stuff, getting a hair cut, and breaking in the Serger I got for Christmas. Hoping that helps.

Ugh, doing #5 just made me want to start #4 immediately, but I’ve been really struggling this year with winter. :/ thinking of trying a sunlamp maybe.

      • Jessica

I did #5, and followed it with binge eating hickory bbq potato chips. I have regrets.

      • Megan Zander

Those sound amazing. I went with left over birthday cupcake and ice cream, slow churned, of course.

    • Mel

#5 didn’t do me any favors. Why isn’t alcohol anywhere on this list? I didn’t need a drink before, but I do now.

      • Megan Zander

        I have wine!

      • Mel

Thank goodness! I’m in the freaking bible belt, so no booze on holidays or Sundays.

      • Megan Zander

CT just started selling on Sundays. I never understood the logic behind not selling alcohol on Sundays, the bible mentions wine on every other page!

      • Mel

Just another attempt to control our sinning. It makes no sense at all since we just stock up on Saturday. The idea of keeping people from doing something “unsavory” on a church day gives me a rage headache. Hell, most local liquor stores still have back doors that the Baptists used to use!

When I used to go to the States (Minnesota and Wisconsin) with my undergrad university equestrian team we would leave on a friday and return on a sunday, a few of the girls who had never been to the States before (or only been to NY) were shocked to find that they couldn’t buy alcohol on sundays in MN.
We learned to stock up on the saturday instead. ;)

I don’t understand why Canadians drink at all since you have the amazingness that is the Wunderbar. Just stick that in a blender and call it a night. I’ve had them on trips and I look for them every time I’m in the store hoping the US has finally come to its senses.

      • LiteBrite

You can, however, buy it on Sundays in WI. In fact, they changed the law in WI so liquor stores can now open at 6 a.m.

Good ole WI. Getting people drunker one law at a time.

      • pixie

Oh, I know it’s available in WI on sundays, but we had to drive through MN to get back to our university, so after the horse show on sunday we’d hop in our van to get a head start, cross from WI to MN, then realize we were idiots for not stopping somewhere in WI. :P

      • Maria Guido

        That’s terrible.

I just plugged everything in for #5. Holy guacamole did that backfire.

I got nothing. Apparently I’m unique or something.
Or I really need to hit the darn gym.

The only thing that is going to get me out of my winter, funky mommy rut right now is Spring, though Mommyish helps.

Ugh where is sitting on the sofa watching the good wife on Hulu and eating Mac N cheese? I am also totally FREAKED out by this face mask I got with a Sephora gift card my pal got me for my Bday, you put it on your face and it srsly feels like BUGS ARE EATING YOUR FACE after about two minutes and you can barely stand it and you wanna remove it because it feels so WEIRD, like I keep masking everyone I know just because it is so damn trippy. But my face is GLOWING

To help me get out of my “rut” I am calling my doctor’s office today and making an appointment to talk about taking anti-depressants and other mental health. You do not know how hard it is to admit to myself that I think that I may really be suffering from depression. I have been putting off calling for many months now. But I am not getting better.

      • C.J.

Good for you for recognizing and admitting to yourself that you need some help with your mental health. I was just having this discussion with my best friend who suffers from depression. She is making a doctors appointment for herself to discuss going on anti-depressants. She was on them for a year many years ago. She is going through a very stressful time right now and she feels she will benefit from going back on them. I hope you start to feel better soon.

I love a good red lipstick. SeneGence is the only brand I will ever buy ever again. They make a liquid that dries into a second skin, so it cannot smudge, and it keeps your lips so moisturized that after a few days of wear it will look like you’ve had your lips filled. Plus it’s made from plants, so most of them smell like flowers.
