(Updated) Selfies Are Not A Cry For Help, Jezebel – #feministselfie

Jezebel writer Erin Gloria Ryan pissed off feminists everywhere today, by saying that “selfies” are a cry for help. I disagree – but I’m not picking on you Erin. I just think you should take a selfie real quick. It feels really good.

I haven’t taken a selfie in a while, but today I decided in the spirit of rebellion I would take one. Here’s the thing – I’m a 40-year-old woman. I’m pretty sure Ryan is speaking to adults like myself and not teenagers when she says:

Stop this. Selfies aren’t empowering; they’re a high tech reflection of the fucked up way society teaches women that their most important quality is their physical attractiveness.

Nor is the proliferation of selfies into a generation of women who are old enough to know better a promising development; it’s a nightmare.

I disagree. Here’s mine:

Screen Shot 2013-11-21 at 3.31.29 PM

This is the first shot that I took when Eve sent me a message cluing me into the Twitterstorm. I’m not wearing make-up and my hair isn’t brushed – but I was able to drag it into Instagram and put a nice filter on it. This image is how I see myself – and in that way it’s a reflection of who I really am. Somehow, I’m not collapsing into my own loneliness having taken it – unlike Ryan:

The picture that accompanies my byline on this very website is a selfie. I’ve posted selfies to Facebook, and Twitter. I always feel bad about it; it always takes several tries to not look stupid, and even now, I kind of hate all of them. “Hey guys, I’m by myself!” my selfie says, “Can you please somehow indicate that other humans are out there so that I do not collapse into my own loneliness????? LOLOLOL” Please, god, no.

Lay off yourself, girl – and every other woman around you. It’s okay to take a few images and find one that you like. It’s okay to like pictures of yourself. In a society that is constantly telling us we’re not good enough, pretty enough, skinny enough – I actually find it really comforting that we’re able to take pictures of ourselves that we actually like.

So – without further ado – here’s a round-up of what I think are the most bad-ass #feministselfie’s on Twitter today.

First – the Mommyish crew:

And the rest of the bad-ass ladies of the Twitterverse…

Selfies are empowering. Women are in control of how they look in the pic and where they post it. #feministselfie

Hey guys, this is Eve Jumping in Maria’s post to share a MAX SELFIE! Max is the adorable son of our lovely boss Meghan Keane, and no, his selfie is not a “cry for help” – he was probably just hungry.

I posted this over on The Gloss but seriously, STFU Jezebel. I post selfies of my haircut cause it looks fucking awesome. I wish certain websites would stop trying to hide their general assholery under the guise of “feminism.”

I’m so sick of the deicing what we can and cannot do or think

    • CMJ

Here’s my lipstick, blowout (it was my first one!), dolled up selfie cry for help. I’m clearly not a feminist with all that makeup and hair product.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

Damn your hair has gotten SO LONG

    • CMJ

It’s shorter now….I got it cut on my birthday. I also took a selfie for that.

    • G.E. Phillips

I always take a post-haircut selfie. I mean, come on. That’s just human.

    • Amber Starr

I’m pretty sure that the post-haircut shot is the reason why the selfie was invented in the first place

    • Amber Starr

Your hair is STUNNING! What an awesome picture :)

    • CMJ

      Thanks!!!

    • meteor_echo

      Dat hair.

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

      Look at those locks!

  • Paul White

There’s times Jezebel edges to self-parody anyhow. I’m not sure how liking your looks is anti-feminist at all…

  • Bethany Ramos

I get what you’re saying, but I’ve literally never taken a selfie because they bug me so much. Maybe it’s because my old BFF from high school is the worst selfie whore I have ever seen. She has roughly 500 pics in her FB selfie album. I swear to God she has a hired photographer with her: selfie walking whimsically on a crosswalk, a selfie at the border of North Korea (not a joke)! She’s the worst.

    • Bethany Ramos

Hilarious! As I was posting this, I saw a daytime TV news clip of inmates taking selfies and posting them to Facebook.

    • brebay

yeah, I have a friend like that. The sad thing is, she is beautiful, but people just stopped commenting after awhile…it was just too much, too obvious. She is an insecure person, and there’s no harm in getting feedback if it makes you feel good, I think it’s all about quantity.

    • Bethany Ramos

My friend is really cute too! Very weird.

    • Amber Starr

It really only ever gets on my nerves when someone posts 9867356398759 selfies a day and each and every one is the same goddamn picture. Especially when every single one is a duck-faced glamor shot. Add a little variety, girls!

    • jessica

Duck face needs to stop. Just go away with the duck face! It isn’t sexy, just kind of odd.

    • G.E. Phillips

      Unless it’s ironic-and-covered-in-green-mud-mask-duckface, right?

    • Amber Starr

The ironic duckface is always welcome, it’s the “No one will notice that I have no lips if I pucker ‘em out” that never works.

    • jessica

Of course. That is just dead sexy face.

    • FormerlyKnownAsWendy

I’ve taken a damn few, and sent them to specific friends for specific reasons…like, see my new haircut. They don’t go on Facebook. I feel like it’s for younger people than me I guess, and maybe I am old, but to me, it seems like it’s kind of a cry for attention. I know I’m gonna get a downvote; pictures are cute, just…why the constant need to show us you sad/you happy/you with spaghetti sauce on your face/you with a bow in your hair…..

    • Bethany Ramos

Upvote from me! My toddler loves selfies, and that’s when it makes sense to me. :)

    • FormerlyKnownAsWendy

      I heart you!

    • Bethany Ramos

      Back atchya!!

    • pixie

Most of my selfies are because I’m bored and rarely end up on Facebook unless I feel like my profile picture needs updating. I also don’t understand the constant need to post every picture.

    • FormerlyKnownAsWendy

Well, and, seeing your pic, you are decidedly younger than me. So you are the right generation. You look so much like one of my friends from long ago that you immediately made me smile. That’s an adorable one, not obnoxious. :)

    • pixie

      Aw, thanks. :)
I’m glad to have made you smile.

    • AP

I don’t like selfies either, because often, they come across as unnecessary bragging, too- like “Look how awesome I am! Don’t you wish your life was as great as mine?”

Also, the ones taken in a mirror are always tacky unless there’s a very valid reason for it, like you’re trying to email a picture of your butt rash to your doctor or something.

    • Jallun-Keatres

LOL mine are always in the mirror… it’s kind of embarrassing but it’s only because my arms aren’t long enough to put my pregnant belly in the frame. :P

  • Annona

I’m pretty over the “things you have to do or you aren’t a feminist” checklist. Way to go making feminism accessible and relevant to young women, Jezebel.

If there was ever anything that would motivate me to take a photo of myself and post it to the internet, this comes the closest.

  • Ptownsteveschick

Webcam selfie the last time I cut my hair off. Totally a cry for a free hairdresser.

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

Yay! I love this! I hope you have started a reader trend here…

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

      I love youuuu

    • Ptownsteveschick

My mom’s comment when I posted that pic “Why are you making such a dumb face?”
      BECAUSE I CAN!

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

I love this pic so much

    • Amber Starr

Because it’s the prettiest “dumb face” ever. EVER, I SAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • meteor_echo

To derp or not to derp – that is the question! :P

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

and coming back to look at your pic again

    • Amber Starr

Yeah, I agree with Eve. I <3 you!

    • CMJ

I can’t get enough of this picture. I love it.

  • Cee

There are many Jez articles that have made me say STFU Jezebel.

    • Katia

Yes ! But the comment section is always fun! When the articles are ridiculous at least there are many who agree..
Like that “normal” (=clinically obese) “gorgeous” ladies taking selfies in lingerie one yesterday

  • Amber Starr

Selfie + Instagram filter = SAAAAAAVE ME, SWEET BABY JESUS!

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

Ugh you are soooo pretty too wth all you readers are smokin

    • Amber Starr

Thank you, Miss Eve! You made me blush for realsies! It does feel good to get such a compliment from someone totally GAW-GEOUS (like yourself!)!

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

      I love this!!!!

    • Amber Starr

      <3 You rock, sister!

    • Ptownsteveschick

Good Lord those cheekbones! Totes a super hot cry for help.

    • Amber Starr

      Aw, thank you SO much!!

  • pixie

was bored one day in the last few weeks of my undergrad and took numerous selfies on my webcam like this.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

LOLOLOLOVE!!!! You can still tell you are adorable though

    • pixie

      Aw, thanks, Eve. :)

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

Kernel is ridic and I hate it and dont even get me started on the treatment of WOC basically I hate them. Side note: eve why is your hair always half on your face in pictures woman? We need some Bobby pins up in here ;) (half joking half genuinely curious)

    • elle

Omg Jezebel. I really hate my autocorrect. Like 99% of the time.

    • elle

Ok now that I’m retooling at it I realize it’s the same one as her avatars just flipped….

  • coffeeandshoes

Most of mine tend to be like this – CRY FOR HELP my hound takes all the attention away OMG

    • CMJ

      OMG. Adorable.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

      So damn cutev

    • Amber Starr

Why is everyone on this site SO freakin adorable??! I love this place! <3

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

      Awww!

  • brebay

I don’t know, I have one friend who posts a dozen a day in full makeup, photo-shopped, purposely-tousled hair with “just nerdin’ out, NBD” and it really does seem desperate for feedback. I think there’s a difference between people who constantly post selfies, especially when they are all touched up, and those who take them every so often when they’re looking especially cute or went someplace fun. Just my personal experience that my more insecure friends who place a high value on physical appearance tend to post a ton more. It’s YOUR page, there should be pictures of you, but…you can definitely sense when someone has crossed the line into need for approval…

    • jessica

Good point. I’ve got a friend like that too. She won’t leave the house without a ton of make up on and her hair done and will abruptly leave a restaurant or bar if she feels that she isn’t getting enough male attention. But those are special cases. The vast majority of selfie-taking ladies don’t have such self esteem issues.

    • meteor_echo

I’m this kind of person. Then again, I’m dysmorphic…

    • Katia

Yes. There are all different kinds. Some seem like yeah a bit vain and conceited but at least they created a context for why they take it. And some really seem to be validating something…and I’m only thinking about the men on my feed! My young female quasi relatives recently started posting selfies and I was kind of sad to see it, I’m usually on the opposite end of these issues from
Feminists but what i felt was similar to the jez article, sad teenagers needing approval of their appearances . It’s a multifaceted issue. I remember my first webcam selfies like 10 years ago and it was very exciting to take those after years of insecurity in front of cameras/uncertainty what the photos would look like.

Carrie – this one’s for you!

    • http://carrie-murphy.com/ Carrie Murphy

      uh, me?

Here, a Professional Resting Bitchface selfie. I have this expression permanently glued to my face.
Also, judging by the eyes, I might be Eve’s long-lost child.

You are always my daughter and you are such a beauty!

Let me snuggle the dickens out of you <3

    • Bethany Ramos

At first glance, I thought that said “the chickens,” and it made me giggle. :)

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

OH my god – I think you do belong to Eve! And GORGEOUS!

    • Justme

Whenever you posted, I always pictured you looking like Lizbeth Salander. And that is a compliment because she is a bitch that gets things done….despite all the horrible people in her life.

    • meteor_echo

D’awww, that’s one of the best compliments I’ve ever received :3
I’m more of a Madeline Madrigal – perpetually angry, and, if someone hurts me, imma hurt them right back. Twice. Wish I were more like Salander though, she’s a genius.

    • LiteBrite

I pictured you with longer hair for some reason. But you rock the short cut!

    • meteor_echo

My hair is too thin to keep it long, sadly. I like the short cut a lot, though. Thank you!

    • http://wtfihaveakid.blogspot.ca/ jendra_berri

You mean you’re not actually Sailor Pluto?
      Mind = Blown! :D

    • Amber Starr

      You, ma’am, have BEAUTIFUL hair.

I LOVE seeing all the selfies from some truly awesome (and beautiful) people around here. We should make this a regular thing, maybe even have themed selfie days!

I have too much time on my hands right now. I apologize <3

  • http://www.benwhoski.com/ Benwhoski

A while back on my own blog, I was writing a post responding to someone else’s complaints about girls taking “risque” selfies. I, of course, used this post as an excuse to take a silly selfie to display along with it.

Was it attention-seeking? Maybe? I don’t know, but it was FUN. And the goofy expression on my face still makes me giggle.

And I consider things that make me laugh a good thing.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

      YES! Love this

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

Nuu, this is your beautiful I”m gonna go see Eve and we are gonna get crunk and eat cookies face!”

    • Justme

I really loved this thread. My Italian grandma used to have to see my school or my bedroom or my mom’s work so that when she talked to us on the phone, she could picture us in our natural habitat…or something like that. And this is the same thing. Now when people post, I will be able to match a face with the screen name!

    • http://twitter.com/mariaguido Maria Guido

      LOVE it!

    • Justme

And the best part is….this was totally before the student teacher dodgeball game. There may or may not have been a few kids I was aiming for. You know, building community of course.

    • LiteBrite

I pictured Meteor_Echo with long hair and you with short. You both proved me wrong. :)

    • Justme

That is hilarious! I wonder what made you picture us that way, you know what I mean? What about the way we write says “long hair” or “short hair.” Fascinating.

I must admit…I picture you as a mix between your avatar and a kinky librarian because you’re smart with a sarcastic streak.

    • LiteBrite

      Awww thanks. :)

  • Alanna Jorgensen

I’ve spent much of my life battling OCD induced depression and horrific self esteem. I never got gussied up much because I felt that I would just look stupid. I am finally starting to reclaim a positive self image, and being brave enough to take a selfie to put out there, faults and all, IS empowering for me. And sometimes it can be silly and fun, like last week when my friend gave me a giant plush Boo from Mario. It was imperative for me to take a selfie with it entitled “Just chillin’ with my Boo.”

Here is mine, fivehead and tattoo in all their glory.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

OH man, I so badly wanna do a mommyish tattoo reader gallery. That is soooo beautiful and so are you!

    • Alanna Jorgensen

That would be awesome! I bet there’s a lot of amazing ink. And thank you!

    • meteor_echo

Oh wow, you have beautiful eyes. Also, sweet mother of all tattoos, right there!
P.S. Show the photo of Boo plz ;3; I collect Mario plushes, but I still don’t have a Boo one!

    • Alanna Jorgensen

Thank you so much! And now that I’ve found this tattoo artist, I don’t think I will ever go to anyone else. She is amazing in both artistry and personality. Oh, and as requested:

    • meteor_echo

I’m dead. Cause of death – adorbs overload.

    • Alanna Jorgensen

My friend’s husband works for Nintendo and snagged it for me. I love that thing so much.

    • meteor_echo

Holy crap, you’re lucky. My own best find was a gigantic plush of Peach, which I found in a secondhand item store. Those things were sold as crane machine prizes a long time ago, apparently. I also have the same one, but small-sized.
Photo not mine, but the plush is definitely of the same kind.
      http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/203/5/f/giant_peach_plush_by_pacguy765-d41a6zf.jpg

    • Alanna Jorgensen

Haha, awesome! I definitely want a collection.

    • meteor_echo

Ebay and thrift stores would be best places to collect stuff. Some plushes are not cheap at all, though – I have a Piranha Plant that cost $30 (traded it for a Digimon backpack, though).

    • Alanna Jorgensen

      Thanks, I’ll check it out.

    • Amber Starr

Ok, so I swear that I’m not just being a world-class kiss ass, but you are beautiful and your tattoo is gorgeous!!!!!!

    • Alanna Jorgensen

Why thank you! I was blown away by your picture as well. I adore your smile and glasses.

    • Alanna Jorgensen

      Thanks! Right back ‘atcha!

  • NotTakenNotAvailable

I usually take selfies when I get my hair trimmed because I know it won’t look that good until the next time I take it to the stylist’s, but I also think cute kitties are a good justification for ‘em.

    • http://Mommyish.com/ Eve Vawter

Since I moved across the world 2 months ago, my sister and I have communicated almost solely via ridiculous selfies on Snapchat. I really think there is no universe in which me making monkey faces at her, and her making double chins back at me, every day, from opposite sides of the globe, could be construed as anything other than hilarious.

Ahhh! Mosaic! Gandalf’s mom was one, his brother was a beige but he turned out plain old grey.

      Betsy is adorable!

I’m sort of new around here, and I don’t have facebook/twitter/instagram (I know, I know<—weirdo) therefore I don't take many selfies, but I'd like to join in on this collective cry for help.

    SELFIES REALLY? THEY’RE ATTACKING SELFIES?!!!
I mean seriously I take selfies when I’m out, WITH MY FRIENDS. I take selfies all the time, you know why? COS THEY’RE FUN.

    Jfc is nothing sacred.

I’m late to the party but here’s my selfie.
So I don’t post selfies that often, but I do sometimes. I do it to show something off (new glasses, or in the case of the photo below, the Halloween fascinator I made) or, y’know, just for fun. It’s facebook (or instagram or whatever)…obviously it’s pretty silly and trivial in the grand scheme of things, but so fucking what? Every month, I spend an hour in my bathroom and put hair dye on my head because I like having hair that is a different colour than what it is naturally. This serves no purpose other than visual….there’s no benefit to it other than I like the way it looks. And that’s ok. I spend a lot of my life focusing on important things, so I’m ok with the fact that there are some things I do that are superficial.
And yeah, fuck you whoever wrote that article and I’m not even going to look up her name because I don’t want to be compelled to read it again.
