Family Succeeds In Taking The Best Worst Beach Photo Ever

No children were harmed in this photo, says dad

Parents in search of the perfect family vacation shot are up against the elements — and that isn’t just limited to the weather. Keeping screaming, tired humans present and smiling is a leg of professional photography for a reason. But for one dad on Reddit, the above moment of camera oops captured some serious parental panic — despite that everyone turned out okay.

He writes:

Dad here. Here’s the story. We had just finished up a family reunion in California and decided to do some family pictures on the final day. Before this photo was taken, we had just spent time getting about 18 people (many of whom were kids) to pose for a large family picture. Those with young ‘uns can attest that sitting still and smiling for the camera are like torture to a 4 year old, so by the time we had finished with the large family we had used up all of my 4 year old’s good graces and he was in a sour mood.

So we attempt to take pictures of just our family and things are going south quickly. Both kids are crying and we are pulling our hair out trying to get one good picture because we’re a happy family dangit and we’re all in coordinating colors that have been meticulously chosen and fretted over. Someone had the idea to do a “candid” photo of us swinging our kids to hopefully raise our kids’ spirit and relieve some of our stress by flinging our kids around.

First couple of shots go fine. As we wind up for the final one I notice something out of the corner of my eye. E (the baby) is at a weird angle and my wife is yelling “GAAAAAAAAAAAAH!” instead of the usual “Wheeeeeee!” So I know something’s about to go down.

I watch my son gracefully do a full backwards layout and land flat on his back in the sand. He’s stunned for a moment, cries for a minute, but after about 2 minutes of sniffling he’s back to his regular self, smiling and laughing.

When I think of all the ways it could have turned out, I’m just amazed that it turned out as well it did.

My palms still get a little sweaty whenever I look at that picture.

As do mine.

Am I a bad person? Because I can’t stop laughing at this photo. Everyone is okay, so it’s funny, right? I have a tendency to laugh at misfortunes so long as I know everyone is fine, ultimately.
Oh god, I’m laughing while I type this.

I love how serene the mid-air baby looks.

      • meteor_echo

Don’t worry, I laughed at this too, and my boyfriend nearly choked on his tea when he saw it, then bellowed with laughter.
I saw the photographer’s comment on Imgur, and the baby landed safely, so nothing serious happened. They got an awesome photo, too!

I was just thinking about how I would totally frame this and put it above the mantle for everyone to see. So maybe we’re all bad people.

      • StephC12

        This is just hilarious.

I am also laughing. It’s a funny picture!

      • KatDuck

I giggle every time I see it as well. For me it’s all about how the baby’s just chilling out as he succumbs to gravity. No change of position, no concern, just watching that sand as it comes towards him. Mom and dad’s contrasting faces plus the older kid’s feet are just the icing.

      Can’t. Stop. LAUGHING.

This photo is hilarious. Glad the baby wasn’t hurt :) And I’m glad that parents can laugh about something even though I’m sure at the time they were worried.

OT, but a friend just posted their wedding pic (5th anniversary is coming up) and they are currently expecting a baby due any time now… A couple of people are saying how awesome it would be if the baby was born on their anniversary (!!!). Am I the only one who would think this would suck???

I’m tempted to say something but I will keep my fingers away from the keys.

      • NicknamesAreDull

I totally think it would suck. I would probably get over it, but yeah.. I wouldn’t be thinking it was awesome.

      • Amanda Lee

Thanks… starting to think I was crazy. I understand anniversaries and birthdays aren’t “everything is all about you” day, but if it’s your kid’s birthday, pretty much guarantees that you won’t be celebrating it, or if you do you’re “selfish”.

Guess who arrived on our fourth anniversary? DD! While we were thrilled, of course it has meant that yes, our day is not our day until she’s between 18 and 30 and out of the house. ;) Thankfully she’s 16 so we’re almost there…

      • NicknamesAreDull

I love our anniversary because it’s a special day for JUST my husband and me. I love my daughter dearly, but I love having things that just aren’t about her, don’t include her.

      • staferny

My FIL’s anniversary is on my BF’s birthday. Thing is, it was his second marriage to a woman that he met online from the Philipines and flew up there to finally meet her face to face and get married while he was there. If you’re planning it for months couldn’t you pick a different day instead of hijacking your son’s birthday? Dick move as far as I’m concerned, but I’m big on birthdays being “your day”.

      • AlexMMR

Our wedding anniversary is the first of the month, my birthday is the following day, and my husbands birthday is the 5th.

Yes, we planned our wedding that way. We know every single year what week we’re taking for a vacation!! Now that we have kids, we know what week they’ll be spending at grandma’s and grandpa’s!

      • Eve

I think it would mega suck. Two of my friends (two separate couples) had a baby within a couple of days of their anniversary. I wouldn’t say anything since it isn’t like they can do anything about it. I was very relieved that this didn’t happen to us.

    • Kmorgan

I can’t even imagine. Glad everyone is Okay.

    • Zettai

      Mom’s face is priceless.

    • kay

they’re using that as their christmas card picture right? they have to use it for their christmas card picture.

      • Koa_Beck

        Let’s hope so!

    • EmmaFromÉire

This is spectacular. Forget using it as the christmas card, if it were my family i’d wallpaper my house with this pic.

    • Amanda

I love this picture so much I want to marry it.

At least not as bad as shaking your baby :)

    • Jinx

5 am, sleeping next to the hubby was NOT a good time to view this article. I might’ve turned and dribbled the water I was sipping, all over him, trying to avoid bellowing laughter.

    • Amanda

Best.Picture.Ever. Seriously the Dad’s carefree expression and the Mom’s “OMG!” face is just awesome.

    • Biliegh Berrie

This is Perfect!!!! Love It :) I would so frame this and proudly hang it for everyone to see!!!!

    • RayL

Laugh if you can, it’s human nature. It’s just blessed luck that it didn’t turn out horrific. I’m looking at a near death experience and thanking God this turned out okay. It’s amazing how pride can make us take such risks. Even with this attitude I can’t stop myself from doing prideful, shameful, stupid stuff. Einstein nailed it, “I only know of two things that are infinite, human folly and the universe. And I’m not sure about the universe.”
