20 Retro Kitchens That I Need In My House

I have a fairly big kitchen considering that I live in a city that could feasibly charge 900 hundred dollars a month for the space of my bathroom. I have a decent-sized counter upon which to make many a cupcake, and I delight in finally having enough space to do so. But my kitchen is still far from those grownup fantasies I have about matching breadboxes that coordinate with my sugar bowls. It’s still just your basic kitchen in which my biggest high-five to myself is that the dishes are clean and everything is put away and the sinks have been wiped. Occasionally I have a cute dish towel. That’s it.

While I am pretty stoked about being a millennial woman with millennial-lady rights (that is, if they’re not taken away from me), I squee for retro/vintage kitchen aesthetics. That and blue ovens.

I LOVE the Retro Blue Kitchen! We’ll be remodelling our kitchen next spring, and I wish we could do it like that. It won’t happen, but I can dream!

    • Koa_Beck

KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE. What are you having done?

    • LadyClodia

We have a small kitchen, and we’re mostly going to gut it and make it galley-style, which will double the counter space. But it’s been a pain to design because we have 5 doorways in the small kitchen. We have 2 year old stainless steel appliances because the appliances that were here were basically non-functioning and frankly scared me, so we have to work those into the design too. So alas, no awesome blue appliances for me.

Five doorways is epic! Old house, I imagine?

    • LadyClodia

It is an old house, and there’s an addition off the back of the kitchen, so that complicated things.

as a woman who is almost done remodeling her 1978 BROWN wood kitchen, you have my upmost sympathy for what will surely be the most painful 6 months of your life.

    • LadyClodia

My husband is convinced that it will be done in a week. Rather than say he’s optimistic, I’d say he’s delusional.

zomg! please do an article on the remodel! we just bought a new house and i’m terrified/excited to remodel my 1976 kitchen, which currently has wood paneling, original appliances, and (surprisingly gorgeous and clean) vintage lino.

It will make you all cry it has been a HUGE PITA and we are not even done :(

Math yes! The blue kitchen is so pretty. That fridge looks so cool.

I love them ALL! I love vintage kitchens and vintage dishes. Pyrex, Jadeite, Fire King, Hazel Atlas, Depression Glass, Mod, Mid-century, atomic age…all music to my ears. I love #17.

Holy hotcakes those are sexy. I’ll be in my bunk.

I live in this nicely restored older home (not restored by us though) and we have the most hilarious stove. It’s from about the 30s I’d guess and you can tell when it was new it was a real whiz bang cooking if the future type affair. It’s got something called a “grillevator” in it which is a hand crankable little elevator for your chops so you can specify how far it is from the broiler. It’s got a snazzy little art deco clock built in. My favorite part though is enameled right into the top of it are simple recipes for roast beef, mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy. You know, just in case you were staring at your stove thinking “oh god, i can’t remember whatever sort of man favorites I should cook with this.” That stove cracks me up.

    Just sharin’ away here

I actually HAVE one of these kitchens. Mine happens to be mostly yellow and chrome. It was one of the selling points of the house but has since become a pain in the butt. Everything is original 1954 which means that nothing works anymore. Ditto the bathroom which has original fixtures, boomerang formica, and pink flamingo tile. We keep patching it together but eventually it’s gonna have to be replaced. I just hope we can do it while preserving some of the original style.

I rented a place that had a retro bathroom. Pink tub, pink sink, pink toilet, matching pink carpet. It was a gross mess, the drain in the tub had rotted out so every time you took a bath you would flood the house, (The bugs I couldn’t understand why we had earth worms, or centipedes until the landlord ripped out the bath) The carpet was rotting from the bath leaking (but who puts carpet in the bathroom?) The toilet would wobble when you sat down, the sink was the only thing left after everything was fixed that needed fixing. Never again I see retro and I think run away, run away now.

Ugh the carpeting! Yes, mine has PURPLE carpet for some ungodly reason! It holds water, smells awful and has rotted out the floor so everything drips into the basement. Retro sucks.

    • Iwill Findu

Retro looks great until you have to live in it. Then retro is just a nice way to say old and smelly.

OMG, number 8! Hot damn, I could live my life in that kitchen.

  • Courtney Lynn

OMG! Can we say eye candy?! I’ll take any of those kitchens with the blue!! Especially turquoise or teal!

    I need these

While vintage appliances are cute as they can be, they can be difficult to maintain. But I think one can have a really cute kitchen with a retro feel while having modern appliances. I think you can do a lot to make a kitchen look retro with color scheme, lines and cabinets.

We just recently moved into an ermaggerd serxy 1970s semi-detached with the original kitchen and I’m trying really hard to do “rental touch-ups” to it. So far, it’s looking great and slightly vintage. I wish I had the bucks for the retro-styled appliances. I leeeerrrrvvveeeee it. If we buy the place oh my damn you better watch out!
