There are many methods by which parents have historically handled the big scary teenager tattoo battle. In my Mommyish tenure — as well as my own stint as a teenager — I’ve heard of such tactics as threats and punishment (your standard ineffective grounding and such). But the Obamas have a daughter tattoo preventative plan that involves YouTube and ink of their own. Parents be getting crafty with the Internets, you guys.
President Obama told the “Today” show that he and the wife have quite the plan for if/when Sasha Obama and Malia Obama decide to get underage tats. He and the First Lady plan to straight up Internet mortify them with “family tattoos.”
Threatening your kids with tats of your own? NICE:
“What we’ve said to the girls is, ‘If you guys ever decided you’re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo in the same place. And we’ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo,” Obama said. “And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that’s a good way to rebel.”
This parenting approach definitely evokes that of those social media savvy parents who famously hijacked their daughter’s Facebook, posting photos of themselves, after she “got fresh” with them. Who says parents don’t know how these fangled social media thingys work?
