It was just a year and a half ago when I was a naive Midwestern mom who had never heard of placenta pills or “the fourth trimester.” Now, after some quality time immersed in internet mommy culture, I’m much more familiar with placentophagia and other decidedly odd bits of mommy culture. The former Playboy Bunny and current Vegas performer recently hit up the readers of her blog for a little feedback about placenta ingestion. Madison wrote,
“This might sound gross, but I’m totally planning on having my placenta turned into pills I can take after giving birth. I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!
Have any other moms out there done this?”
First of all, we happen to know a couple moms who have tried this whole placenta business, Holly. Another new celebrity mom, January Jones, made headlines when she talked about turning her placenta into pills. She let everyone know not to worry, “it’s not witch-crafty.” We had a writer here at Mommyish go into more detail about why she was planning to eat her placenta to help battle with depression. We’ve now had twin sisters Tia and Tamara Mowry sharing placenta, though that feels like a whole different thing.
The truth is, placenta pills are becoming something of a trend for crunchy moms wanting to be as in touch with their new little ones as possible! Hospitals are even changing their policies to make the practice of taking home your after-birth a little easier for new moms. This whole placenta trend is happening!
