I keep trying to ignore this Harlem Shake video trend but it’s everywhere! I can’t escape it! And now it has been brought to my own backyard because 30 students who attend school in Oakland County at Milford High School have been busted for making their own version of the Harlem Shake. I was all ready to defend the kids for being suspended over something harmless like a little bad dancing but then I saw the duck.
The video looks fine and goofy and silly.. except for the part when the one kid is holding the poor ducky against his crotch. LAME. And the reason for the school suspension is because another version of the video is said to be “racially insensitive.” Lame lame! How can I defend you teenagers if you’re going to be racially insensitive douchebags? From the Oakland Press:
“There’s more than one video and the second video was taken down off of YouTube. It has some very disturbing content as far as the racial content,” Root said. “The Harlem shake video, the students also violated many (parts) of the student conduct (rules)… It was indecent and vulgar and there was a live animal involved.”
No animals, except service animals, are allowed in the school.
Okay, that end part is kinds funny because it’s hard to pass of a duck as a service animal, but why oh why did these kids have to have disturbing racial content on their video? Had they just stuck to being goofy without that aspect and that poor duck I would have sympathy for them, because shooting a video on school property like this is overall harmless.
Alex Larson, an 18-year-old senior at the school, said he and his several of his friends, all juniors and seniors, were suspended for three to five days. The video on YouTube, however, has been viewed nearly 17,000 times as of Monday, Feb. 25, 2013.
Larson said they were just having fun, and they never anticipated it would be such a big deal.
“We had no intentions to harm the school at all in anyway, and we didn’t think we’d get in any trouble,” Larson said. “If we had to do it again, we wouldn’t do it anywhere near the school because we wouldn’t want to deal with anything we’ve had to deal with … We just wanted to do it for fun and make a video like we always do.”
I’m all about teens having fun and being assholes to an extent (as in being young and stupid, not to a Nodianos level asshole extent) , but not when it involves terrorizing ducks or behaving in a way that could be construed as “racist.” That part sucks. So I’m with the school on this one, because even though I haven’t seen the “racist” version of the video I know Detroit has enough problems without it having to be compounded by a bunch of punkass kids who are known by their video as “White Boys Making Noise.”
Detroit was just named the “Most Miserable City” according to Forbes Magazine. Make some noise for Detroit!
