Wacky Alabama Lawmaker Makes Wacky Pro-Life Argument By Calling Fetus An Organ

1118184211Those crazy, silly politicians are all up in our uteri again! This time, it comes courtesy of the great state of Alabama (Birthplace of Harper Lee and Rosa Parks! The Yellohammer is the state bird!) where a lawmaker by the name of Mary Sue McClurkin opened her mouth-hole in support of the HB 57 bill (which is a TRAP bill) that regulates state abortion clinics to be more like surgical centers by claiming that a fetus is the “largest organ in a woman’s body.”

Not only does this statement basically prove that anyone can run for office (I’m so getting my campaign ready) even if they are a total idiot, but that the GOP needs better arguments when spouting off their pro-life rhetoric in order to have their bills passed. From the Montgomery Advertiser:

“When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body,” McClurkin said in an interview Thursday. “That’s a big thing. That’s a big surgery. You don’t have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.”

I know certain pro-life groups want to call fetuses by other names but claiming it is an “organ” is pretty wacky. Even my gallbladder and my skin know better.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, R-Pelham, would require physicians at abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at local hospitals; require clinics to follow ambulatory clinic building codes and make it a felony — punishable by up to 10 years in prison — for a nurse, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant to dispense abortion-inducing medications.

So basically, they are trying to make safe and legal abortions impossible in Alabama, and McClurkin thinks the relatively safe abortion procedure is a “big surgery” because it’s removing an organ from a human body.

I understand that we all have differing opinions in the world. I know some of our readers are adamantly pro-life. I appreciate that and I don’t mind debating my views with people who hold differing views, but at least have the slightest awareness of basic human anatomy before you go spouting off your wacky-logic under the guise of fact.

A fetus is not an organ. Your brain, which is an organ, should have been able to tell you that.

Vehemently pro-life politician makes completely absurd and idiotic statement from somewhere out in left-field that has no bearing on fact. Color me shocked (not.)

Even if it was an “organ” is certainly isn’t the biggest at the stage of pregnancy when abortions are legal. At that point it is smaller than a banana meaning the liver or lungs are much larger, and definitely more vital to survival.

Not to mention, if an organ becomes undesirable – riddled with cancer, failing, badly damaged – you take it out in whole or part if at all possible, maybe with a transplant if it’s essential. So that’s an even bigger fail.

But if it’s classified as an organ (which, of course, I think is crazy), doesn’t that mean it’s completely a part of a woman’s body, meaning that she can do with it as she wishes? In a roundabout way, wouldn’t this be a good thing for the pro-choice movement, since people (theoretically) have control over their own organs? And what about organ donation in this case? Just sayin’…

I was totally thinking the same thing, if an Organ is bugging us, or even has the potential to bug us in the future, then getting it removed is perfectly legal AND covered by insurance.

Maybe a stupid question, but humour the foreigner (me), why aren’t abortions carried out in hospitals? I’m English, in England, and that’s where we do them. For free…

stop abortion bragging Helen! haha. Because we have safe, clean, legal clinics here that perform them. FOR NOW. :(

^ This. The overwhelming majority of abortions are safe, simple, outpatient procedures that can be done without additional risk (and with added cost-effectiveness) in a non-hospital clinical setting. Also, some types of very early abortions are perfectly safe have happen at home, given that you’re regularly corresponding with a healthcare provider. Example: RU-486, which is generally taken at the Dr/NP/PA/RN’s office but doesn’t take full effect for many hours, generally after you’re at home. You then follow up again in the clinic.

In many states (my own, for example), they are. It depends on what’s available in your area (Alabama’s not good), and what your insurance situation is.

that’s a whole lot of stupid right there.

    Fetus=organ isn’t a pro-life argument. It’s a pro-choice one.

    • Makabit

Well, it’s a pro-choice argument when you actually take it apart, since an organ is undeniably part of its host body, and cannot possibly be considered a person, but it’s a stupid one as well, because a fetus is not an organ. As would be pointed out by many pro-life voices if a pro-choice politician tried this unintelligent line of reasoning on.
