Joe Jackson appeared on Piers Morgan last week to give some parenting advice. He believes his children turned out to be successful and it’s all thanks to the way he raised them. He also thinks there’s “no such thing” as beating a child. Um, yes there is. Maybe you’re confused by what that means, Joe. Let me clear it up for you.
Remember when your kids were growing up and you inflicted physical pain over something they did to punish them? That’s beating. It exists. You did it.
Joe accused parents today of being too “soft” on their kids:
âYeah, they are too soft. One of the reasons I say that is because kids nowadays are killing their parents in some cases,â Jackson said. âLetâs get into this âbeatingâ thing. Thereâs no such thing as âbeating a kid.â You whip them or punish them over something they did, and they will remember that. And theyâll remember it in such a way that they wonât do it again. Thatâs the way I was.â
Well, if you were shooting for not being seen as “soft,” you definitely succeeded, Joe. I don’t think anyone who flippantly uses the term “whip” in regards to child-rearing would be seen as soft. Sadistic, maybe, but definitely not soft.
Through years of allegations, Jackson has adamantly denied beating his children. Well, now that we all know he has no idea what “beating” means – it’s probably safe to say there was some abuse there. In 2011 he was quoted by CBS News as saying, ”I never beat him. I whipped him with a stick and a belt. I never beat him. You beat someone with a stick.”
Many children have been raised in an atmosphere of violence. Child abuse is a plague on our country. The United States “has the worst record in the industrialized nation â losing five children every day due to abuse-related deaths.”  I have a serious problem with someone who becomes notorious for physical and emotional abuse, then has the nerve to go on TV and accuse parents who are trying to raise kids without the threat of physical abuse, “soft.”
Your children succeeded in spite of you, not because of you, Joe Jackson. And if you are too old-school or ignorant to understand that abuse is wrong – maybe you should just keep your mouth shut.
