33 Michigan Schools Close Early Due To Mega Mayan End Of The World Sandy Hook Rumors

shutterstock_109505600Between the tragic Sandy Hook shootings, Americans purchasing a boat ton of guns, and mass rapes in India, this is definitely what the end of the world looks like to me. But officials from five districts in Lapeer County are somewhat on the same page, hence why they’re cancelling two days of school and starting winter break early.

NBC reports that 33 schools in Michigan will be closing early due to a worrisome amalgamation of post-Newtown fear and impending Mayan end of the world calendar rumors. The unfortunate timing of a school shooting and “doomsday” lore is described by one superintendent as a ”serious distraction” for students.

There have reportedly also been rumors of potential threats of violence, which have been ”investigated and determined to be false.” Nevertheless, Matt Wandrie, superintendent for Lapeer Community Schools, says they’ll be locking up campus early:

“Although we in the county are reluctant to cancel school because the rumors are unsubstantiated, we feel it is the most appropriate decision given the gravity of recent events and our present circumstances,” he wrote.

As an adult, I’ve been trying to keep it relatively together while I describe the funerals of babies. My stomach drops with every potential copy cat Sandy Hook threat I read. But for children who are currently sitting in classrooms, watching whiteboards, and crossing campuses, who knows how deep this fear resonates with them. The impacts of this tragedy on kids more than warrants a couple days out of class — at the very least — to feel safe again.
