The Discovery That There Is ‘No Connection’ Between Lanza’s Mother And Sandy Hook Makes Tragedy Even More Baffling

shutterstock_121098334It’s been two days since the horrific shooting that claimed so many young, innocent lives and authorities are still trying to piece together a motive that would shed some light on what would drive Adam Lanza to massacre so many children. The initial theory – that Adam’s mother, Nancy Lanza, worked at the school – has now been debunked by the school superintendent.

‘No one has heard of her,’ former board member Lillian Bittman told the Wall Street Journal. ‘Teachers don’t know her.’

What we do know is that she loved guns. The New York Times reports she ”often took her sons to one of the shooting ranges here in the suburbs northeast of New York City, where there is an active community of gun enthusiasts, her friends said. At a local bar, she sometimes talked about her gun collection.” Investigators have linked her to five weapons: two handguns, two hunting rifles and a semiautomatic rifle that is similar to weapons used by troops in Afghanistan. Tragically, her son “took the two handguns and the semiautomatic rifle to the school. Law enforcement officials said they believed the guns were acquired legally and were registered.”

The two lived in a large Colonial home in Newtown. Adam struggled with a developmental disorder, and had dropped out of the Newtown school system. A relative told the NYT that Adam Lanza had been home-schooled for a time because his mother was not “satisfied with the school.” There are some details about her personal life – she loved landscaping, she attending labor day picnics and dice games – nothing really out of the ordinary.

She was his first victim – shot in the home that they shared. The breaking news – that she was a teacher in the school and Lanza had travelled to the school to victimize her – was somehow easier to comprehend than the fact that she had absolutely no connection to the school. Investigators say Adam Lanza may have attended the school years ago, but they have no explanation for why he went there on Friday.  With no note left or manifesto uncovered – we’re all just left to wonder, why? Why children?

Why?

“Why?” – the question for which, sadly, there will never be an answer.
