It started out as an annoying, ridiculous prank that two grown adults should be pretty ashamed about. It ended with a tragedy that is not a laughing matter. The hospital receptionist duped by two Australian radio DJs into giving out personal information about Kate Middleton and her pregnancy was found dead blocks away from the hospital, presumably of suicide.
In the beginning of the week, Mel Greig and Michael Christian called Prince Edward VII Hospital in London and pretended to be the Queen and Prince Charles. They spoke to Kate’s private nurse and learned that the Duchess had an uneventful night and had been receiving fluids. Then, of course, the DJs played recordings of the private information for their audience and laughed at the poor hospital employees who truly believed that they were talking to their country’s monarch.
After plenty of outrage and international headlines, Kate and Prince William left the hospital yesterday and we all thought the nonsense was over with.
Now, we’ve learned that the woman who received the initial call and passed it on to Kate’s nurse was found dead just yards away from the hospital where she worked. The details have not been shared but sources are saying that the woman’s death was presumably caused by suicide. The Scotland Yard’s only so far as been,
‘Police were called at approximately 9.25am on Friday, December 7, to a report of a woman found unconscious an address in Weymouth Street, W1. London Ambulance Service attended and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
‘Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the incident. The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage’.
There are still a lot of unanswered questions. And to be fair, even if this woman did kill herself, it’s not appropriate to blame the idiotic DJs and their prank. While that situation undoubtedly added stress to this woman’s life, it would be shallow to pretend that an incident like this would drive a happy, mentally stable woman to suicide. The fact is, no one knows what happened yet.
All we know is that a woman caught up in the royal baby mania has lost her life. It’s a tragic new twist in an event that has taken over the media completely, drowning out some of the joy and excitement surrounding this pregnancy.
