Justice Sotomayor Tells Sesame Street Character To Get A Real Job

Supreme Court Justice Justice Sonia Sotomayor appeared on Sesame Street last week and gave some really good advice to beloved character Abby, who dreams of being a princess. She told her to get a real job. Well – sort of.

Sotomayor and Abby talk about the word “career.” Sotomayor explains that “a career is something that you train for and prepare for and plan on doing for a long time.”  When Abby declares that she wants to be a princess for her career, Sotomayor puts a quick end to that foolishness:

“Abby, pretending to be a princess is fun, but it is definitely not a career,” Sotomayor said.

Abby replies, “You’re right. I guess a princess isn’t really a job.”

I never put a whole lot of thought into it, but I guess pretending to be a princess is pretty dumb. What the heck do princesses do, besides get trapped in castles and wait for Prince Charming to arrive and rescue them? This is definitely not role playing for the next generation of feminists we need to concentrate on breeding.

Abby asks, “well, then what kind of career can a girl like me have?”  Sotomayor explains, “you can go to school and train to be a teacher, a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer and even a scientist.”

Yes! Down with the pink fluffy dresses and magic wands. I can get behind this kind of empowering advice for little girls. Without fail, someone will probably get hip to this role-playing for girls and start making bedazzled pink lab coats and glittery briefcases. But at least it will be a start.

Abby asks if Sotomayor has a job, to which she replies:

Yes I do. I am a United States Supreme Court Justice. I went to school and studied law and became a judge.

“Wow, that sounds important,” Abby says.

It is. In your face, Disney, and helpless princesses everywhere!

Now we need a segment for boys telling them that they can’t be batman when they grow up.

Batman is a billionaire businessperson and a renegade fighter of crime. I want to be Batman!

Sesame Street! They don’t pull any punches. Well done.

Unless you are the female ruler of a principality… Then, yes, being a princess is a lot of work!

True, but unless you are born into it, it’s a pretty feeble aspiration…just hanging around waiting to meet a prince.

Ok sure. But I don’t get the incessant downers on all things princessy. Why can’t we give our girls both messages? a) it’s important to work hard, learn well, and do something useful with your life, and b) it’s Ok to have fun and be girly/princessy if you darn well want to.
