Will Arnett And Amy Poehler Expertly Time Their Divorce Announcement With The VMAs

Everyone’s favorite Baby Mama, Amy Poehler, made fans everywhere sniffle a little when she and husband Will Arnett declared that they were divorcing after nine years of marriage. Despite however long the two have been debating or considering this decision for their family, particularly for their kids, 3-year-old Archie and 2-year-old Abel, their publicist decided to time the announcement to perfectly coincide with the VMAs. Not only is the timing tactful for their personal lives, but the move also diminishes whatever slogs the press may drag their family through.

The soon-to-be ex-husband and ex-wife are entitled to bury the very personal news that you don’t exactly want to have to shout into a megaphone (unless it’s a masterfully executed career move). Divorce announcements only come over the wires on a Friday afternoon for a reason (Hi Katie Holmes!), and the evening of the VMAs is pretty much the equivalent. With all eyeballs fixated on Amber Rose‘s pregnant belly or jabs at new mother Snooki, the public is distracted enough to not full on gawk at the split of beloved Hollywood funny couple.

So let’s a take a moment to appreciate the work of the Arnett-Poehler PR team. Walk this timeline with me.

The first news of the divorce is confirmed to US Weekly by a publicist and written up at 6:40 EST. Explosive as it may be, the VMAs commences at 8 pm, meaning that red carpet and all that hoopla has already begun. A rep for the couple then confirms the news to People at seven pm. ABC News gets a phone call and writes up the news at 8:47 pm, after the show has already started. And after a flurry of news regarding Chris Brown and Rihanna exchanging a kiss, it’s the following morning and their split is buried under countless other VMA reports.

The secret to a good marriage may be elusive, but the secret to an expertly announced divorce is obvious. Timing is everything, and the couple may have just saved their kids the awful pile on of headlines and media glare. So good on them.
