This story just kills me – but in a good way. Roland Davis and Lena Henderson were high-school sweethearts who got married in 1944 at the ripe age of 19. They had four children together but after 20 years of marriage decided to call it quits. “I won’t exactly say he was wild, but you couldn’t tie him down for anything,” Henderson told ABC News. Their divorce was amicable and, as Henderson explains, “We were very good friends, [I had] no animosity towards him. He just wasn’t ready and I knew I had to buckle up and take care of the children.” (What a woman!)
They went their separate ways, with Davis remarrying and Henderson going on to have another child. They kept in touch throughout it all, though more recently that involved daily phone calls and, well, let’s just say they were rekindling an old flame. Their children, meanwhile, had no clue because, as Henderson puts it, “I never told the kids anything, it was not their business. It was grown folks’ business.” (Could you die? I love this woman!)
To make a long story short, Davis ultimately decided it was time to win back his ex-wife. He proposed to Davis, who took her time mulling it over before saying yes. The couple plans to tie the knot – 48 years after divorcing – this Saturday in Buffalo, New York. The best part of the story is hearing what the couple’s second-eldest child, Johnnie Mae Funderbirk, had to say:
“It’s like a dream come true. I’m 65 years old and I’m like a kid who’s nine, finding out that my parents are getting back together.”
Could you imagine?! The couple is now 85 years old. Funderbirk says her mom’s trying to play it cool but “when she put that dress on, you see her eyes light up, back straightens up. She’s a lot more excited than she lets on.” Dying of cuteness here.
Of course, some kids never give up hope that Mommy and Daddy will get back together, which is kind of heart-wrenching since it rarely works out that way. But, really, could you imagine being in your 60s and hearing that your parents are getting re-married half a century later? Unbelievable!
