Duggars Show Startling Photos Of Baby Jubilee Shalom At Memorial Service

duggars 19 kids jubilee shalomNews broke last Friday that 45-year-old Michelle Duggar had suffered a miscarriage at 19 weeks when doctors were unable to find a heartbeat. It was a devastating loss for the Duggar family – the stars of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting – who had been excitedly planning for their newest addition. The Duggars went on to name their baby girl Jubilee Shalom and, on Wednesday, they held a memorial service at their Arkansas church.

During the memorial, the Duggars distributed a series of startling photos of Jubilee with her parents. One shows the stillborn baby’s tiny little feet along with the caption, “There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an imprint on this world.”

If you’re wondering how these very intimate photos have essentially gone viral, it’s all thanks to a family member who posted them on Twitter (classy move). They then surfaced on a fan site and, well, you know how it goes from there.

According to reports, the photos were released without Michelle or her husband Jim Bob‘s consent and were intended for private use only. The family had contacted Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a non-profit organization that helps families deal with miscarriage and the loss of their babies, to take the pictures. Once you see these photos, you can never unsee them. And, trust me, they stir up a whole range of emotions (most people find them creepy, some beautiful). But what we think is irrelevant since all that matters is how the Duggars feel. It’s their loss, after all, and it’s astounding that people are continuing to weigh in with their hurtful thoughts on the matter.

It seems that most people can’t relate to their lifestyle – just the mere fact that they’ve got a whopping 19 kids – and so they’re quick to judge and to mock. These leaked photos just add to it all, though you’d have to be pretty heartless not to be affected somehow upon viewing them – regardless of whether or not you’d take the same approach to grief and mourning.

I followed the link, and, quite honestly, don’t find these pictures disturbing at all. In fact, even though it wouldn’t have been my choice, I find these photographs sweetly and sensitively done.
What bothers me more than the pictures is that someone leaked them and distributed them online. Let the family mourn their loss in privacy and peace.

If they really wanted it to be a private thing, they would not have cameras following them everywhere. They were posing for pictures and doing photo ops for this.

It’s funny for a family that is so into god, not even an infants death is sacred..its just another ratings ploy.

It actually used to be very common to have a death portrait done in America at the turn of the century- memento mori. Photographs back then were very expensive, so sometimes it would be the only picture a family would have of their loved one, whether it was an infant or elderly parent. It’s not a question of religion, but how a family chooses to mourn the loss of a member. And keep in mind, the Duggars did NOT consent to those pictures being leaked, so don’t blame them for someone else they trusted being a jerk.

What is disturbing about these photos? They are beautiful. Perhaps whoever is calling them “disturbing” is just afraid that people will see that this is a BABY and not a blob of tissue, and might have to second guess some positions they have taken on “choice.”

    • Well

Nice to know that you enjoy pics of dead “babies.”

You are an awful person. Why is babies in quotation marks? Because when someone’s child dies it no longer counts as a person to you? Well let me tell you, having a stillborn baby is a very awful, heartwrenching experience. The pictures I have of my son are the only pictures I will ever have of him. If I had pictures of him while he was alive, I assure you I would be looking at those instead. So yeah. Fuck you, basically, you cold-hearted asshole.

There is no “choice” in a 20 week pregnancy that’s illegal.

I thought they were well done and appropriate. The problem is that in this culture we hide death and we’re uncomfortable with it. And then for a baby to die is unthinkable. Kudos to the Duggars to share their deep grief so that others can see that it’s okay to grieve our lost pregnancies and we don’t have to hide them.

Oh come on! If you make money by having a show promoting your personal life and your personal values, then you open yourself up to criticism. If you can’t take the hurtful comments then you shouldn’t be on a reality television show encouraging people to adopt your religious beliefs.

I find the picture of the family all posed together and smiling (the older kids, including the married one! Not just the little ones) super creepy but the other pictures are quite tasteful.

My daughter was born with a medical disorder that is usually fatal before birth, and so I belong to several support groups that have Moms who have lost their babies before birth due to this disorder. I’ve learned many hospitals now offer professional photography services for the family, and believe that having photos and/or video helps the family in their grief. Some families choose to share the photos and some do not, but it is commonplace in this situation nowadays for the pics to be taken. The family did not intend for them to be released to the public.
