Video: 13-Year-Old Girl Schools Us On Slut-Shaming And Rape Culture

13-year-old girl slut-shaming videoIt’s not just us ladies on the blogosphere these days who are refusing to call Courtney Stodden a “slut” and discourage the word in response to girls’ clothing. In these modern times, it looks like even 13-year-old girls are taking to the interwebs to discuss the topic of slut-shaming as it affects their junior high lives. And one in particular can break it down for you in just three and a half minutes.

A very articulate young lady known only as “Astorice” on the web carved out some alone time with her video cam to explain the following topic: “Slut-Shaming and Why It’s Wrong.” The blonde, braces-clad teen not only gives us a solid definition of what slut-shaming is, she also effectively ties the concept to rape culture. And just so we’re all clear on our terms here, the perceptive 13-year-old says:

“Slut-shaming the act of degrading or mocking a woman because she dresses in tight or revealing clothing, enjoys sex, has a lot of sex, or is rumored to be sexually active.”

She accurately defines rape culture as:

“…a culture in which sexual violence against women is commonplace and in which prevalent attitudes tolerate said sexual violence. Slut-shaming contributes to this by sending the message that it’s OK to rape sluts because by having too much sex or dressing in tight revealing clothing, they’re somehow asking for it.”

She reminds us that, counter to what rape culture would have have us believe:

“Rape is caused by rapists, misogyny, structural violence, and institutional tolerance — not by women’s clothing or makeup, not the way she talks, or walks, not by her drinking, not by her not being careful enough, and certainly not by being a slut.”

This smart kid not only has her facts straight, but delivers these terms with conviction, solid examples, andwith a tone suggesting that she’s able to see past all that slut-shaming chatter that often begins within her age bracket. Yet this bright girl knows better perhaps due to the flourishing feminist blogosphere that is so accessible to web-savvy tweens and teens. Now if only we could get a video of young 13-year-old spouting off these concepts.
